ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION
This chapter presents the analysis and interpretation of the data
collected on the acceptability level of Wellness Massage NC II Elective
and the competencies the respondents learned during modular distance
learning as well as the suggested intervention.
Acceptability Level of Students in Wellness Massage NC II Elective
Wellness Massage poses continuing demand, and it appears to be
a necessity. Wellness Massage is proposed to have a positive effect on
quality of life and positive effect on immune function “Massage has been
shown to increase range of motion and flexibility as well as to improve
measures of anxiety, depression, vitality, and perceived stress”
(B.M.I.,2023). However, despite its positive effect, its acceptability by the
students as an elective subject need to be considered.
Based on the data gathered, the respondents slightly accepted the
Wellness Massage NC II as an elective during modular distance learning.
It had a weighted mean of 2.47. During the enrolment, most of the
students choose the Wellness Massage as an elective because, for them,
it is an easy subject. However, after students have taken the elective
during modular distance learning, they would not be able to perform it
due to social distancing. It would be irresponsible and dangerous to
assume that performing a Wellness Massage is risk-free in the age of
COVID. Journal of Neuroscience (2020) has said that "Human touch, in a
context that is safe, friendly and professional, can be incredibly
therapeutic and relaxing." Students have slightly accepted the Wellness
Massage elective due to the pandemic. They may not be satisfied with
having this elective, as they could not properly learn the competencies of
Wellness Massage. Additionally, they may be fearful due to the situation
they are facing because of the pandemic.
Competencies Learned in Wellness Massage NC II Elective
To be a skilled massage therapist learning the competencies of
Wellness Massage is important for the students to build competencies on
the said elective. TESDA (2023) described the Hilot (Wellness Massage NC
II) Qualification consists of competencies that a person must achieve
these are to plan the hilot wellness program of client/s, provide pre-
service to client/s, apply hilot Wellness Massage techniques and provide
post-advice on post-services to clients. This is parallel to the Department of
Education (2016) curriculum guide on Wellness Massage that leads to
National Certificate Level II (NCII). This course is designed for a high school
student who ought to develop knowledge, skills, and attitude to perform
the tasks of Wellness Massage service. It covers core competencies
namely: (1) plan the Wellness Massage program of client/s; (2) provide

preliminary services to client/s; (3) apply Wellness Massage techniques;
and (4) provide advice on post-Wellness Massage services.
To present the different competencies learned by the respondents,
the succeeding tables in this section are divided into three columns. The
first column shows the competencies, the second column shows the
weighted mean for each competency and the third is the verbal
interpretation of the weighted mean.
Planning Wellness Massage Program. There are nine (9) different
competencies in planning a Wellness Massage program. Planning the
wellness program of the client/s competency details the requirements for
establishing and maintaining rapport with the client/s. Obtaining
information regarding the bio-psychosocial needs of the client and
assisting in meeting client needs (TESDA, 2023). The competencies of
planning a Wellness Massage program are shown in the following table.

Based on the data gathered, the first competency that
should have been learned by the respondents which is identifying vital
client information was the least learned with a weighted mean of 2.47.
This competency includes taking vital signs such as body temperature,
blood pressure, heart rate, and respiration rate. This competency needs
certain equipment and needs to be skilled in using the equipment to
identify vital information. As per observation, the school does not have the
necessary equipment for taking vital signs. This adds to the reasons why
this competency was not learned by the respondents.
Similarly, the competency of being able to explain Wellness
Massage service and products was the least learned by the students with
a weighted mean of 2.28. Students have not learned the competency of
explaining Wellness Massage services and products because students did
not properly learn the different services and products that Wellness
Massage could offer.

The competency which is explaining the philosophy and science of
Wellness Massage had a weighted mean of 2.38. Philosophy and science
of Wellness Massage have been least learned by the students.
Respondents should be able to explain and help the clients to understand
the philosophy and science of Wellness Massage but because they did
not take seriously the modules during the distance learning they did not
also learn this competency.
Further, the competency which is discussing the health and healing
concept of Wellness Massage was the least learned having a weighted
mean of 2.4. Respondents should have understood the different healing
concepts of Wellness Massage. It must be discussed with the clients for
them to understand the benefits they could get from every session of
Wellness Massage. Granada University in Spain (2021) found that a single
session of Wellness Massage immediately affects perceived pain in
patients with chronic tension headaches. Rubbing or providing pressure
on the muscles and joints is a way to promote body healing. Moreover,
according to Farber and Wieland (2016), “Wellness Massage has the
potential to minimize pain. Massage therapy is the preferred treatment
option for patients suffering from back pain, knee osteoarthritis, neck pain,
fibromyalgia, headaches, or migraines. Respondents least learned this
competency because most of the students do not understand the health
and healing concepts of Wellness Massage.

Discussing the concept of Wellness Massage was another least-
learned competency, with a weighted mean of 2.41. Massage therapists
need to understand the various concepts of Wellness Massage so they
can explain and discuss them with clients effectively. Despite being a
fundamental skill, students have learned this competency the least due to
modular distance learning, which has affected their learning process.
Based on the data gathered by the researchers, the competency
of confirming the Wellness Massage program was the least learned by the
respondents, with a weighted mean of 2.25. After assessing the client, the
massage therapist is expected to offer a wellness program suited to the
client. Once the client has decided on the wellness program, the
massage program is confirmed to the client. Respondents learned this
competency the least because they did not have experience performing
it, especially as they did not have immersion aligned with this subject.
Moreover, the competency of updating clients’ records and
documents had a weighted mean of 2.19, which indicates it was the least
learned. Updating clients’ records and documents provides a clear
record of the products or treatments a client has received, helping to
track progress and replicate the same service in the future. It also ensures
that you are aware of what works best for your clients, enabling you to
provide the best customer care and service. This is another competency

that respondents did not learn because they lacked first-hand experience
in performing it.
Evaluating client satisfaction had a weighted mean of 2.22 which
was also the least learned by the respondents. Customer satisfaction is
important because it illustrates whether your customer base likes what
you’re doing. High satisfaction leads to greater customer retention, higher
lifetime value, and a stronger brand reputation. Low customer satisfaction
scores are important too to know what to improve.
Checking workplace qualities and procedures had a weighted
mean of 2.19, indicating it was the least learned. Policies and procedures
ensure that rules, standards, values, culture, and benefits are clearly
outlined. Massage workplaces always have procedures, standard work
practices, safety, environmental, housekeeping, and quality guidelines.
Understanding these workplace qualities is essential for a well-planned
wellness massage program with clients. Unfortunately, this competency
was least learned by the respondents.
In general, all the competencies in planning a Wellness Massage
program have a general average of 2.31 which means that the
respondents least learned the competencies required for them to be able
to plan a Wellness Massage program. Planning a Wellness Massage
program is preparation before conducting a Wellness Massage service to
clients to locate and address the problem that needs to be treated. Clinic

Sense (2022) has stated that educating clients is an important part of the
role of a massage therapist. Clients are not just coming in for a massage;
they are coming in for therapy. Regardless of whether the clients come in
for relaxation or pain relief, they all want to know the same thing: (1) How
many sessions are needed?; (2) When should they come back?; (3) Can
massage help them?; (4) How long will it take?; and (5) What should they
do between sessions?”. Answering these basic questions is part of the
competencies in planning Wellness Massage. So, it is important that
before any pre-service and actual massage happens, a massage
therapist knows how to plan a program. If learning is difficult even during
face-to-face classes where the teachers personally explain the concepts,
then, it is more difficult during distance learning. It seems that the
respondents did not study and understand the competencies of planning
a program for Wellness Massage.
Pre-service to Wellness Massage Clients. There are eight different
competencies of Pre-service to Wellness Massage Clients. The
competencies of Pre-service to Wellness Massage Clients are shown in the
following table.

Providing pre-service to clients describes the knowledge, skills, and
attitudes required to deliver preparatory services to hilot wellness clients,
including receiving clients, making appointments, and responding to
client complaints (Training Regulations for Wellness Massage NC II, 2023a).
Based on the gathered data, the first competency in providing pre-
service to Wellness Massage clients is scheduling, which was least learned
with a weighted mean of 2.25. Some customers inquire before making a
decision and ask for scheduled availability through phone or in-person

visits. Part of this competency involves having good communication skills
and telephone etiquette to respond to the client and successfully
schedule an appointment.
The students have least learned the competency of scheduling,
with a weighted mean of 2.41. Scheduling involves arranging, controlling,
and optimizing work and workloads. According to the Training Regulations
for Wellness Massage NC II (2023b), appointments are scheduled based
on the required length of service, staff and room availability, and
workplace policies and procedures. Appointments are confirmed with
clients, and details are recorded. Preparation for each client's massage is
crucial for providing a personalized experience that meets their needs
and encourages repeat visits.
The competency of communicating to clients has a weighted
mean of 2.59 which has an interpretation of least learned. Usually,
massage therapist is trained to communicate with their clients by the
workplace policies and procedures. As mentioned earlier, communication
is vital in scheduling to promote good relationships between clients and
massage therapists. “The communications skills necessary for teaching
self-care to clients are the same as those the massage therapist needs
during a session,” explains Panofsky (2021). It is about sharing information
in a manner that is understandable and useful for all involved.

Observing good interpersonal relationships was the least learned
by the respondents with a weighted mean of 2.34. Customer satisfaction
does not only come from the service itself but also from the established
rapport between clients and massage therapists. Individuals in an
interpersonal relationship must respect each other’s views and opinions to
develop a sense of trust. A massage therapist must create a good
interpersonal relationship with the clients. Sadly, this competency was not
taught and learned by the respondents.
Emphasizing the standard of policies and procedure has a
weighted mean of 2.38 which has an interpretation of least learned. All
workplaces have specific standards of policies and procedures that
should be established and will serve as guides of the business.
The respondents least learned the skill of keeping and updating
accurate client records, with a weighted mean of 2.31. Client information
must be recorded in the system according to workplace policies,
procedures, and relevant laws. Keeping and updating accurate records
ensures a clear history of the products or treatments a client has received,
facilitating progress tracking and replication of services in the future.
Moreover, the appropriate use of Wellness Massage products had a
weighted mean of 2.44, making it a least learned competency among
the respondents. For effective performance of this skill, a massage
therapist should be capable of identifying and explaining the products

used in Wellness Massage according to workplace procedures. Without
the proper tools, equipment, and supplies, a massage therapist will
struggle to relieve their client's stress and pain safely and effectively.
Furthermore, it is important to identify various products and services along
with their benefits and comparative advantages. Unfortunately, this
competency was not mastered by the respondents.
Evaluating client satisfaction has an interpretation of least learned
which has a weighted mean of 2.25. Customer satisfaction is a
measurement that determines how happy customers are with the product
and capabilities. One of the practices being done to determine customer
satisfaction is through surveys accomplished by clients. It can help the
company to determine how good their service to the clients is. Moreover,
good communication and rapport with the customers can also help to
know the client’s concerns and needs to be addressed per established
procedures and guidelines. However, this was not also learned by the
respondents.
Providing pre-service to clients is the pre-procedure before
conducting a Wellness Massage. Based on the data gathered the
competencies under pre-service were least learned and had a general
average of 2.37. Unfortunately, the respondents weren't able to grasp the
essential competencies necessary before applying Wellness Massage
techniques to clients. “Although most of the Spas have receptionist

performs most of the pre-service competencies such as greeting of all
guests, answering phone calls, assisting guests with questions regarding
spa services and products, booking all appointments, checking the guest
into the computer system and charging for services performed” (Soriano,
2020), as a massage therapist it is also necessary to be knowledgeable of
these skills. It was difficult to learn these competencies, especially without
the proper guidance of the teacher when this subject was offered during
distance learning.

According to the data gathered by the researchers, the first
competency in applying the Wellness Massage technique, which is
observing health and safety procedures, has a weighted mean of 2.75,
interpreted as moderately learned. The respondents were aware that
massage therapists must wear medical scrubs and use protective gear
such as gloves, masks, and gowns. These measures not only protect the
therapist but also the client. Other safety rules that apply to both client

and therapist include open communication, including through
explanation of what the client can expect from their massage treatment.
Afterward, the competency of the application of proper draping
had a weighted mean of 2.34, interpreted as least learned. Draping
involves using a large towel or sheet to maintain coverage during a
massage. This ensures that clients can remain nude under the draping
while feeling safe, warm, and unexposed. By employing draping
techniques, massage therapists only work on the exposed part of the
body, such as the back, one arm, or one leg.
Besides the competency of proper draping application, the
preparation of Wellness Massage products, furnishings, and paraphernalia
were also least learned by the students, with a weighted mean of 2.47.
Before a Wellness Massage session, the massage therapist should prepare
the various products, furnishings, and paraphernalia required for the
massage.
On the other hand, the competency of preparing clients for the
Wellness Massage program had a weighted mean of 2.38 which has an
interpretation of least learned. Preparing for each client's massage is
crucial for providing a massage that caters to their needs and creates an
experience that encourages repeat visits.
Additionally, the preparation of the client for a Wellness Massage
session had a weighted mean of 2.50, indicating it was least learned. This

involves understanding and meeting your clients' preferences to ensure
their comfort throughout the session. Informing your client about the
importance of disrobing, especially when using oils or other lubricated
massage lotions, is essential. Providing clients with the opportunity to
express their preferences without causing distress is crucial.
The competency of personal hygiene practices, with a weighted
mean of 2.59, indicates it was least learned. However, good personal
hygiene is crucial for protecting ourselves and others from illnesses.
Remember to bathe and wash your hands, especially before preparing
Wellness Massage products and during the session.
The standard of operating procedures has a weighted mean of 2.25
which has an interpretation of least learned. This aims to achieve
efficiency, quality output, and uniformity of performance while reducing
miscommunication and failure to comply with company regulations.
The competency of hygiene and infection control practices has a
weighted mean of 2.53 which has an interpretation of least learned.
Infection control refers to the policy and procedures implemented to
control and minimize the dissemination of infections in hospitals and other
healthcare settings with the main purpose of reducing infection rates.
The methods of scanning have a weighted mean of 2.22 which has
an interpretation of least learned. Scanning is a technique used in
Wellness Massage to evaluate the health of a person’s muscles and other

soft tissues by touching these muscles with the fingers and hands. Through
a proper palpation assessment, the therapist can identify areas of tension,
pain, or other issues that may require attention.
The methods of locating imbalances in the body have a weighted
mean of 2.44, indicating they were least learned. The easiest way to
detect an imbalance is through observation. The most common
imbalances occur in the shoulders, hips, and spine. Stand facing a mirror
with your back straight and feet slightly apart. Check if your shoulders
appear to be at the same height, if your neck appears straight, and if
your hips look level.
The competency of the massage pressure area has a weighted
mean of 2.44 which has an interpretation of least learned. A pressure
point massage can benefit trigger-point-based pain because it is
designed to find the actual cause (the trigger points) and apply pressure
to help these areas relax; in turn, healing the area that’s experiencing
pain.
The competency of strokes has a weighted mean of 2.47 which has
an interpretation of least learned. There are different types of strokes used
in Wellness Massage.
The competency of long, deep strokes (hagod) has a weighted
mean of 2.47, indicating it was least learned. Deep strokes can be
performed with the palm or forearm. The pressure during these strokes

should be deep, reaching underlying muscle structures. Deep strokes are
used to lengthen and mobilize soft tissue and help improve joint function.
The competency of short light stroke (haplos) has a weighted mean
of 2.59 which has an interpretation of least learned. Short, gentle strokes
are employed to evenly distribute pressure and soften the muscle tissue.
The competency of one finger press (pindot) has a weighted mean
of 2.44, indicating it was least learned. It involves applying pressure
directly to a specific point for five seconds. This technique is performed
using the thumbs, which are placed no more than one inch apart from
each other.
The competency of two or more finger press has a weighted mean
of 2.59 which has an interpretation of least learned. Pisil, also known as
“pagtulak ng lamig”, involves using two or more fingers (excluding the
thumb) to stimulate or massage small muscles and their insertions,
loosening tight muscles.
The competency of Grasping (piga)-optional has a weighted mean
of 2.25 which has an interpretation of least learned. Piga-palm press or
grasping with the hand is used to calm and relax the big and wide
muscles.
The competency of customizing the amount of pressure applied
has a weighted mean of 2.25 which has an interpretation of least learned.
The amount of pressure applied in a Wellness Massage should be

customized to the client’s preference and needs. Applying the correct
pressure in massage is an advanced skill that varies from client to client.
Using the 1-to-10 Pressure Scale will help meet clients’ expectations by
applying correct pressure.
The competency of duration of application of pressure has a
weighted mean of 2.22 which has an interpretation of least learned.
Pressure is the physical force exerted on an objective. The force applied is
perpendicular to the surface of objects per unit area.
Competency of generally, towards the heart, has a weighted mean
of 2.16 which has an interpretation of least learned. The circulatory system
is made up of blood vessels that carry blood away from and towards the
heart. Arteries carry blood away from the heart and veins carry blood
back to the heart.
Hot part of the body to cold (thermal flow) has a weighted mean of
2.19 which has an interpretation of least learned. Increased temperature is
the process of increasing circulation around a person’s body to enable
muscular and connective increasing temperature allows the range of
movement to increase as restriction is reduced.
The competency towards the lesser lumps has a weighted mean of
2.25 which has an interpretation of least learned. Skin lumps are any areas
of abnormally raised skin. The lumps may be hard and rigid, or soft and
moveable swelling form of skin lump.

The competency of the pre-massage procedure has a weighted
mean of 2.41 which has an interpretation of least learned. Pre-massage
helps by increasing the temperature of the soft tissues. The friction of
touch against the skin increases temperature. An increase in temperature
pre-massage is important to warm up the muscles and prepare them for
activity.
The competency of using hands and fingers as the medium based
on massage area or body part, duration, frequency, rhythm, and amount
of pressure has a weighted mean of 2.28 which has an interpretation of
least learned. This uses a hands-on performing massage on the client to
measure the amount of pressure to apply.
The competency of workplace standard operating procedure has
a weighted mean of 2.38 which has an interpretation of least learned.
Standard operating procedures provide the policies, processes, and
standards needed for the organization to succeed. They can benefit a
business by reducing errors, increasing efficiencies and profitability,
creating a safe work environment, and producing guidelines for how to
resolve issues and overcome obstacles.
Competency for the client’s responses has a weighted mean of
2.31 which has an interpretation of least learned. Client responses in
Wellness Massage refer to the effects of a massage on the client’s body.
These effects can be hard to measure for both the client and the

therapist. However, effective communication can help consumers better
understand how Wellness Massage can be a part of their health and
wellness goals. Balestar (2017) has stated that “Healing Reactions’ may
take place after your massage and are completely normal showing that
the massage is working well and your body is responding to the
treatment.”
Based on the data gathered the general average of applying
Wellness Massage techniques is 2.39 which has an interpretation of least
learned. Applying Wellness Massage techniques is the process where to
perform a session to a client. This is another competency that requires
proper guidance from the teacher; it cannot be performed without the
necessary knowledge and skills. Therefore, it is crucial to learn. When
massage techniques are applied to the body, they can affect it through
two different response pathways. Mechanical responses to techniques
occur directly in the manipulation of the tissues from components such as
pressure, range of motion, and the pushing, pulling, lifting, compressing,
and twisting of the tissue. Changes to the body because of these effects
include increased circulation to the area, changes in fluid movement,
increased pliability of the tissue, and reduction of adhesions (Soriano,
2020). Students least learned these competencies because of improper
learning methods that the school had conducted for a learner.

Post advice and Post Services to clients. There are ten (10) different
competencies of Post advice and Post Services to clients that students

The competencies of aftercare service workplace policies and
procedures have a weighted mean of 2.34 which has an interpretation of
least learned. Aftercare service workplace policies and procedures in
Wellness Massage can vary depending on the establishment. However,
some common policies and procedures include: (1) Providing a
comfortable and safe environment for clients; (2) Maintaining client
confidentiality; (3) Ensuring that therapists are properly trained and
licensed; and (4) Providing clear communication with clients about the

aftercare instructions. These policies and procedures are important to
ensure that clients receive high-quality care and that therapists can
provide their services safely and professionally.
Monitoring clients has a weighted mean of 2.41 which has an
interpretation of least learned. Monitoring refers to how we keep an eye

interpretation of least learned. Rebooking is a service that you offer your

Wellness Massage products has a weighted mean of 2.63 which has
an interpretation of moderately learned. Wellness Massage products are
products that are used to enhance the experience of a massage. These
products can include massage oils, lotions, creams, gels, and other
accessories that can help you relax and feel better after a massage. They
can also help to soothe sore muscles and reduce inflammation.
Workplace procedures has a weighted mean of 2.50 which has an
interpretation of least learned. A workplace procedure directly relates to
workplace policies. A procedure is a list of steps demonstrating how to
implement a policy. Policies and procedures are used together to give
employees a good understanding of company rules and values.
Recommending products to clients has a weighted mean of 2.31
which has an interpretation of least learned. These recommendations
allow customers to find the products they need and are relevant to them
quickly and easily. The items generated are personalized according to the
individual's browsing and purchase behavior and product information
(such as product inventory).
Product benefits has a weighted mean of 2.41 which has an
interpretation of least learned. The focus of the treatment is on pain relief,
tension release, and the promotion of blood circulation. The resulting

Table 3 shows the correlations between the acceptance of
students and the competencies learned by the students. The correlation is
significant at the 0.05 level (2-tailed). The hypothesis of the study where
acceptance is not directly related to the Competencies learned by the
students was different in the results of the study where the statistically
significant correlation coefficients marked with an asterisk (*) have a
significant correlation at the 0.05 level (2-tailed). In this case, LOA's
correlation with LC1.1, LC2.3, LC3.5.3, and LC3.8.5 is statistically significant.

handling the Wellness Massage subject. Guiding students is one of the
most important facets of a teacher’s job. A good teacher should be
focused on making sure their students truly understand the lesson, for
them to be able to learn more effectively.
Aside from the above, it is suggested to increase monitoring of the
teaching-learning process in Wellness Massage to ensure the learning
happens is the second in rank. The main purpose of monitoring is to check
whether the students have learned the lesson or not.
Ranking third is Replacing Wellness Massage NCII with other
electives that demand fewer supplies and equipment. Learning becomes

easier when activities can be conducted without extensive resources.
Providing the necessary supplies and equipment for Wellness
Massage is in the fourth rank. Without the proper tools, equipment, and
supplies, it is difficult for the student to learn the concept of Wellness
Massage. They will just rely on the theory and will never learn without
practical application.
The fifth-ranked option is to continue offering the Wellness Massage
NCII but to avoid over-enrollment if capacity is insufficient. Over-
enrollment and limited capacity make it difficult for teachers to
accommodate all students, hindering the learning process.
