interviewed by a board of two administrators who must then determine which ones will be
accepted into the program. STEM students are required to maintain an acceptable GPA, and
exhibit exemplary behavior. We are required to take at least one STEM class each semester and
participate in the science fair each year (but seniors may substitute an internship for science fair
participation).

Interests / Activities
• Chess Club
During middle school, chess was a daily pastime of mine. After participating at my high school’s
club for 3 years, I was appointed the head of the chess club. My role is to bring members in and
remind them of meetings through a group chat.
• Science Fair
I’ve participated in the science fair for the past three years. My first year, I researched the effects
of emissions testing and air quality, to which my solution would be an app that would inform
drivers of more economic ways to drive. During that year, I nearly finished a course in Java
coding to develop my app. However, in the following year, my solution turned into a product; it
consisted of two Raspberry Pi boards, two bread boards, a motion sensor, a buzzer, and an
organic compound sensor. My goal was to engineer a device that detects emissions from idling
cars and alarms drivers to turn off their engine. For this project, I needed to burn the Raspberry Pi
OS into an SD card and insert it into the Raspberry Pi board, integrating the software with the
board. I had to further install and set up a terminal for which I could write Python code into, to
program my sensors with the board. I searched multiple tutorials and used Stack Overflow to
understand how to integrate my sensors with my Pi board. I further had to connect my sensors to
certain pins on my Pi board and breadboard. After multiple test trials, I’ve gotten each sensor to
work. Although my science fair project is no longer mandatory, I’m still working to improve my
device.
• Tennis
I’ve been playing tennis since 2020 and I’ve competed twice. Now, it is a fun sport I enjoy
playing in my free-time.

my free-time.
