CHAPTER I
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Introduction

Filipino food is renowned for its robust flavors but is often criticized for

its perceived lack of healthiness. Many describe Filipino dishes as “fatty, salty,

overcooked, and fried to perfection,” leading to their reputation as unhealthy

Filipino food. According to Brago (2023), the food environment in the country

is essentially failing Filipino children who eat sugary, salty, and fatty food

products, driving the high prevalence of overweight and obese kids.

Many Filipinos have adopted unhealthy lifestyles, such as consuming

fast food that often contains high levels of salt, sugar, and unhealthy fats.

Additionally, they frequently consume sugary beverages like soda and indulge

in processed snacks such as chips and candies, which lack essential nutrients

and are packed with preservatives and artificial additives. In conclusion, the

rise of unhealthy habits in the Philippines is a pressing concern that requires

immediate attention (Agdeppa, 2023).

Almost everyone has a sweet tooth. People want something sweet

after their meal. They crave something sweet at unexpected times.

Sometimes, people make cookies for breakfast. That is why cookies make an

excellent snack. Cookies are a popular snack for people. Cookies are baked

goods. These cookies are like a sweet, crunchy, chewy canvas, ready for

anything people can think of. Chocolate, nuts, fruits, and grains, to name a

few, produce deliciously contrasting flavors and textures that will satisfy even

the most discerning sweet tooth.

People enjoy cookies because there are various options. There is a

cookie for everyone. Whether others prefer the classic chocolate chip, the

healthy oatmeal raisin, the colorful sugar cookie, or something sweet and

salty, there is a cookie for anyone. It not only makes cookies the ideal sweet

treat, but it also ensures people will never tire of them. Second, they are ideal

for on-the-go. One of the reasons cookies are so popular is that they are

highly portable. Finally, their designs will make people happy. Cookies come

in various shapes, sizes, patterns, and colors. People are very creative with

their cookie designs; there is always a cute cookie to make a person smile. It

prompted business proponents to conduct a feasibility study on vegetable

cookies.

Vegetable cookies contain vegetables such as carrots, cucumber, and

spinach. The business proponents consider this their research because it is a

healthy snack. Business owners hoped this vegetable cookie would provide

customers with great satisfaction and delight through its delicious flavor. This

business will provide customers with a go-to snack to help them relieve the

stress they have been feeling all day without worrying about their health. This

company's goals are to develop a variety of vegetable-based cookies that are

healthy and appealing to a diverse range of customers. They want to make a

cookie with a distinct flavor that everyone will want to purchase.

Vegetable cookies would tap into the growing consumer interest in

healthier snack options. It could discuss the ever-increasing market for plant-

based products and the desire for novel ways to incorporate more vegetables

into one's daily diet. This study could also look into the challenges of making

vegetable-based snacks appealing and delicious to a wide range of people

and the potential benefits of eating such products.

Brief Background of the Study

Veggies in Bites are made by 3A's&P, aiming to introduce vegetables

as cookies to the market. The cookie's importance is balanced in nutrition and

taste. The cookies offer three different kinds of veggies and entertaining

healthy eating habits. Veggie in Bites is specially made for individuals who

enjoy eating but are concerned about their health.

In Filipino cuisine, sugar is ubiquitous, so the invention of vegetable

cookies made from various vegetables provides a unique taste that benefits

health. Veggies in Bites offers a variety of vegetables, such as carrots,

cucumber, and spinach. These cookies encourage health-conscious

individuals to consume more vegetables and entertainingly adopt healthier

eating habits. This vegetable cookie business' target market consists of

people of all ages, from two (2) and up, who enjoy cookies as a snack. These

cookies are also suitable for health-conscious individuals who enjoy eating but

are concerned about their health. It is also ideal for parents whose children

enjoy eating sweets. Combining vegetables and sweets in a cookie can

provide a healthy balance for children.

The cookies at Veggies in Bites are not just about cookies. It is about

delivering an experience. To improve customer satisfaction, cookies excite

taste buds with unique cookie vegetable flavors and offer a wide range of

services. The service here is to make every eating moment memorable, from

Furthermore, the staff here are friendly, always available to assist customers

with their questions and provide an enjoyable shopping experience. Veggies

in Bites is people's one-stop shop for excellent food and fantastic service if a

person craves a snack.

Veggies in Bites, a business specializing in everyone, will be located at

Cris Eatery, Sta. Cruz Street, Poblacion 3, Bauan, Batangas. The chosen

location for the physical store is Barangay Poblacion especially the decision to

establish the business in this area was based on several factors, including

accessibility, market potential, availability of resources, and it is close to

schools, offices, churches where lots of parents, millennials, and health

conscious who are the business’ target customers, are found.

Pande Batangueña, Ka Idro's Bakery, Ka Justa Bakery, Ann's Home,

as well as coffee shops that offer baked cookies like KAPE?, Kape Rosa, Bo's

Coffee, and many more, are the existing famous shops that offer cookies in

Bauan, Batangas. Those mentioned bakeries and coffee shops have made a

mark in Bauan and Batangas. Yet, Veggies in Bites is the only establishment

solely dedicated to crafting healthy vegetable cookies, providing a unique and

nutritious option for cookie lovers in the area.

The rationale of this study is to introduce customers to delicious and

healthy desserts, explicitly focusing on vegetable-based cookies. Through

Veggies in Bites's offerings of vegetables, customers can enjoy a unique and

enjoyable experience. The business company 3A's&P ensures customers can

Vision

The vision is to become the leading vegetable cookie manufacturer in

all supermarkets throughout the whole province of Batangas and to contribute

to the healthy lifestyles of those who purchase this product.

Mission

The business’ mission is to provide and manufacture a snack that

people can enjoy without worrying about their health because it is healthy,

nutritious, and delicious, with a unique flavor.

Objectives of the Study

The following study seeks to determine the viability of introducing vegetable

cookies. The study's proponents propose the following objectives to meet the

study's needs:

1. To determine the product's viability in the market using marketing

tactics and SWOT analysis.

2. To ascertain whether the study is technically feasible by determining

the optimal manufacturing process, production capacity, and place for

the proposed firm.

3. To determine the type of company organization that complies with the

legal criteria for the firm to function will help establish the management

4. To ascertain the financial status, statements, earnings performance,

and important financial ratios of the company.

5. To determine the company's potential contributions to society and the

community.

Definition of Terms

Cookie – A type of small, flattened cake that usually has a crispier

consistency than cake and is baked in batches on a large flat pan. Many types

of basic cookie dough can be prepared and a variety of ingredients can be

added to the basic dough such as chocolate chips, dried fruit, or nuts.

Vegetable – An edible part of a plant, like a stalk of broccoli, a carrot, or a

spinach leaf. With a few exceptions, vegetables are just about the healthiest

food you can eat.

Snack – A small serving of food between meals.

Health-conscious – The degree to which individuals are aware of the

healthiness of their diet and lifestyle and care about their health. Health-

conscious consumers are concerned about nutrition, fitness, stress, and the

environment.

Scope and Limitation of the Study

This feasibility study sought to determine the viability of Vegetable

Cookies in Bauan, Batangas if sold in supermarkets. The study includes a

market technical section that discusses the market environment in which the

product will be established. Management entails putting the right people in the

correct positions and considering financial and socio-economic factors to help

the proponents determine the study's adequate scope and limitations.

This study demonstrated the manufacturing and production processes

involved in the said product, as the study's proponents achieved success. The

ultimate goal of this study is to pique the interest and willingness of target

customers and the overall market to purchase the featured product, vegetable

cookies.

Despite the proponents' willingness to achieve the business goals, they

may need help with the resources and ingredients required to produce

vegetable cookies. As new entrepreneurs in this type of business, it may be

difficult for business owners to find investors who can assist them in

managing the business and providing financial support. Despite these

challenges, the company will strive for smooth production and effective

product execution in the business and market sectors.

The scope of the study is defined as a thorough investigation into the

feasibility of introducing vegetable cookies to the market in Bauan, Batangas.

It includes analyzing consumer preferences, market demand, manufacturing

processes, distribution channels, and economic viability in the local context.

The marketing aspect includes the target market, data collection and

analysis methods, SWOT analysis, and practical strategies or techniques.

There will be no or few limitations because the business proponents are

familiar with these and have already studied them.

Moving on to the technical aspects, the production process focuses on

manufacturing and producing the business' products. It also includes the

materials and equipment needed, the human resources required, the final

layout of the business structure, and the location where it will be built. The

limitation in this case will be that the business owners need more knowledge

of architecture, required materials, and the process involved in establishing

the business.

Management comprises organizational forms, appropriate business

types, and business structure selection. It includes the job description and

specifications for each position in the business. The limitation on this part is

that the business owners need more expertise in business management,

which may cause them difficulties in running the business.

The financial aspect includes the initial capital requirements, the

company's overall economic performance, and the analysis and interpretation

of financial statements. These are necessary to determine whether the

proposed business will thrive in the coming years, with the expectation that

the vegetable cookies business will remain stable in the business industry. It

is well known that a significant amount of money is required when starting and

introducing a new business in the market industry. The limitation is the poor

financial situation of the business owners. Materials and equipment necessary

for the business will be limited due to the need for proper resource allocation.

The business will generate revenue through effective product pricing to cover

these expenses.

Finally, the socioeconomic aspects will address the proposed

business's impact on the community's and country's social and economic

conditions. The company will contribute to the economy through government

efforts to raise revenue through permits, licenses, and other fees to legalize

the operation. The social responsibility is to help improve the community's

condition, provide grants to workers, and, most importantly, offer job

opportunities to reduce unemployment in Bauan, Batangas. The limitation is

that it may only provide a few job opportunities, given that the vegetable

cookies business is small compared to other cookie businesses.

Despite the limitations of the business above, the study's proponents

are optimistic about bringing this business to fruition.
