Definition
• “conditional is a type of sentence that is made up of
an if-clause (condition) and a main clause (result). It
is used to describe a situation that might happen or
might have happened.”

• The if-clause can be the first or the send part of the


sentence:
If you study, you will pass the exam.
You will pass the exam if you study.

Zero conditional
• Usage: to express general truth/situations that are
always true or possible.

• Rule: If+ present simple+ present simple

• Example: If you heat ice, it melts


• If you don’t brush your teeth, you get cavities.
• If it rains, the grass gets wet.

First conditional
• Usage: to express a possible or realistic condition and
its probable result.
• Rule: If+ present simple+ future simple

• Example: If I go to the mall, I will buy something.


• If you study hard, you will pass the exam.
• If you don’t hurry, you will miss the train.

Second conditional
• Usage: to express a hypothetical condition and its
probable result.
• Rule: If+ past simple+ would+ verb(base form)

• Example: If I were you, I would accept the offer.


• If I inherited a billion dollars, I would travel to the moon.
• If I were 20, I would travel the world.

Third conditional
• Usage: to express an unreal past condition and its
probable result in the past.
• Rule: If+ past perfect+ would have+ past participle

• Example: If I had saved my money, I would have bought


a car.
• If I had studied, I would have passed my exams .
