STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
I believe creating an environment for studying what a person wants as a part of the overall educational
goal. Being accepted by the University of Alberta in their engineering faculty is really an
accomplishment. My parents and my brother were really proud of me and it really was a moment of
triumph. University of Alberta is one of the top ranked universities in the world and has the best
facilities for its student to excel and contribute to society and challenge global problems. Engineering
faculty at the University of Alberta is one of the best in Canada and it really is more than an opportunity
to study there.
I still remember my physics teacher saying, “Engineering is infinite”. My father is an electrical engineer,
my brother who will be graduating in mechanical engineering this year. I really got thrilled by the
projects and concepts my brother used to talk about and whereas my father was always in the pursuit of
teaching me the easiest to the hardest concepts of algebra. On the other hand, my mother who is a
doctor always gave me the guidance and vision to pursue what I want. These factors contributed me to
pursue engineering, where I think, I will be able to put myself to use for the betterment of myself and
my community. I started looking for universities back in 11th grade with a dream of studying in the top
universities of the world. Canada is a hub of world class education and University of Alberta drew my
attention because of its Electrical Engineering Program with nano engineering option. I had a few other
universities in mind but I felt like the engineering program at the University of Alberta fits my need.
Undergraduate Research option also drew my attention. Pursuing this dream wasn’t easy at all. Scoring
around 90% in board exams was a challenge and the whole college application process was a rigorous
one. But this whole process prepares one for the challenges ahead and gives a clear vision. The courses
at the university of Alberta are tailored for preparing a qualified engineer and becoming one of them is a
goal of mine. I got two scholarships from the University of Alberta, one valued at 5000 CAD and another
one valued at 2500 CAD which is renewable with conditions. These scholarships are a token of
inspiration.
Education in Bangladesh delivers a lot of opportunities but it still lacks a lot of factors which a student
looks for. A number of universities in Bangladesh has a lot of potential and a proud history but still lacks
the quality and fails to provide the environment I look for. Bangladesh is a developing nation and has a
promising economy but still lacks strength in technological advancements and global community for
research and development. Technological advancements are the driving wheels of the growth of any
nation today and with the breakthroughs every day in communication, I strongly believe to think
globally. I believe studying in the program I wish to will open a window of opportunities. Engineers are
the backbone of a nation. After finishing my studies in Canada I will be surely able to contribute to
growing tech scene of Bangladesh. The government of Bangladesh is opening up a lot of research
centers, economic zones which is a recent initiative of the government is functional and is in demand of
engineers and surely a degree from one of the top ranked universities of world would surely be in
demand as well as a lot of private companies are also working day and night for a prosperous and a
better Bangladesh and the whole world. As a Bangladeshi I will be able to contribute to the best of my
limit if I get the proper tools to sharpen myself. My parents work for the betterment of the nation every
day and they surely value the necessity of a world class education in this age of globalization. My
permanent address will always be where my parents are and I wish to come back with a plethora of
knowledge and experience to work for a better Bangladesh building a better tomorrow.
Why do you wish to study in Canada in the program for which you have been accepted?
I got accepted by the University of Alberta for their BSc in Engineering program. University of Alberta is
one of the best universities in the world and has a global recognition for its quality of research and
depth in scientific and engineering studies. From a young age I used to relate and think about the
relation between science and reality. Science and reality are the foundation of engineering and
understanding the world deeply and coherently. Understanding mathematics, physics and chemistry are
the most rational way of understanding nature and the practical aspects of human endeavor. After
thorough research I chose University of Alberta which would fit my need. University of Alberta houses
qualified and advanced faculty which revolves around growth of human development. Moreover,
Canada is one of the developed countries in the world and grows the best out of mankind. Canada is a
diverse and peace loving country and it’s more than an opportunity to study in Canada at one of the
most prestigious universities in the world. One can understand and learn more about the Canadian
culture. University of Alberta has a diverse community as well. Studying in Canada will let me gain
experience of a lifetime. Having a degree from the University of Alberta will open a lot of windows for
me and I will be able to pursue anything of my choice.
One thing that intrigues me is nanotechnology at the university of alberta. This is one of the unique
programs in the faculty of engineering. Nanotechnology is the science of nanomaterials and
Bangladesh is one of the fastest growing economies and has a lot of potential. Till now no university in
Bangladesh offers the same type of program and doesn’t fit my need. Pursuing this degree and gaining
more knowledge in this field will let me
