PLM in LV MCC

Introduction:
In LV MCC the easiest way to understand how the orders gets made is comparing it to
making a meal out of a recipe book
So, consider the super market example:
R&D = Vendors for a super market.
R&D = Creators of the recipe book ingredients
R&D = Programmers of the automated shopping cart

8
CN Checklist Rev13 12/16/2019

Windchill = Vendor Delivery truck and shelf stocking workers

SAP = Super Market
Hires/Configurator = Automated Shopping cart
Req engineer = The cook/chef
Customer order = The meal

So, when the customer places his order “The meal”, the req Engineer “The chef” sends
the recipe to Hires “The shopping cart” and then Hires “the shopper” start pulling parts
from SAP “the super market” that was released thru windchill “the delivery truck” by
R&D Engineers “The vendors”

How do we build MCC?

10
CN Checklist Rev13 12/16/2019

MCCs are built using 3 different BOMs that are assembled in 3 different location in the
factory and they are:
1. Unit BOM: The function-specific part of the MCC, could be one or more unit in a
section
2. Section BOM: The Skeleton enclosure containing all the units
3. Split BOM: The horizonal main bus and any part shared in all three enclosures of a
shipping split

1. The unit BOM:

 Driven by Dynamic assemblies in windchill and Hires selection
 Filtered by 3 different logic sheets to define optional and needed components
 Final output is sent to subassembly area and unit area in the factory as well as
finish line

2. Section/case BOM:
 Driven by Static subassemblies in windchill
 Changes based on unit and function selection
11
CN Checklist Rev13 12/16/2019

 Filtered by one logic sheet

 Final output is sent to Case assembly area in the factory

3. Split BOM:
 Driven by static subassembly in windchill
 Changes based on unit and function as well as rating selection
 Filtered by one logic sheet and selected bus plating option
 Final output is sent to the MB assembly are in the factory as well as the
shipping stage

What is Hires?
Hires is a Dynamic BOM generator that works based on the input of the req
Engineer to allow short cycle orders

Who prepare Hires data base?

12
CN Checklist Rev13 12/16/2019

Hires is driven by 6 different logic sheets prepared by R&D engineers and fed to the
software by IT team
EVol_Case: Section/Case Parts
Split_BOM: MB parts
Assembly_Data_e: unit Mechanical parts
Protable_3: filtering and conditions sheet
E_BOM: Electrical and electronic parts
BOM_BY_LOC: conditional mechanical parts needed based on the selection of E_BOM

Common Gear Issues

1. Manufacturing locations for gear components are Mebane-US03 and
EDESA_Monterry-MX-US13 or just one of them depending on the part.

13
CN Checklist Rev13 12/16/2019

2. For parts made by one plant and purchased by the other, assign both as the
manufacturing plant.
3. SAP Material Types:
• For Custom parts - “Semi Finished Good & Custom Piece Part – HALB”
• For commercial parts - “Commercial OEM – ROH”
• For Generics and no suffix bus parts - “UNBW”
4. If the gear part type is incorrect, submit a ticket for correction to the admin team.
For example, shown below is a sub-assembly listed as a custom part.

5. Rename gears if needed.

6. “Off the shelf” parts will be created as a commercial part, except EMPIS hardware.
The following link will help you create a commercial part:
How to Create a Commercial Part
7. Delete any structure under custom part gears. Custom parts do not have BOMs.
14
CN Checklist Rev13 12/16/2019

8. There should be no gear parts for 1040/1041/1042/1043/1044 assemblies and

genetics.
9. Plating options for Bus Plating

Submission Issues When It Comes to Using Windchill

1. CN description - Please read the details in the next section.
2. The CN name and description should provide enough information of the reason for
generating the CN and a description of the actual change. Attaching communication
emails to the CN is preferred if it applies; e.g. “change requested by other
department”.
3. The “Name” Attribute for parts in Windchill should have a clear short description of
the nature of the part, and it should be the same for Gear and CAD. The name should
be “ALL CAPS” for CAD and gear
4. Certain characters are not allowed in part names and descriptions. Avoid using
characters highlighted in red below.

5. Make sure the gear and CAD components are associated to each other and associated
to the right revision. Avoid having gear parts associated to an old revision CAD parts.
6. Make sure the gear and CAD components are in the correct Windchill Container.

17
CN Checklist Rev13 12/16/2019

7. Use “Full track” CN for parts and assemblies that will go to Manufacturing or even buy
parts. “Fast Track” will be used only for Documentation update and reference
assemblies; e.g. E9000 help.
8. For BOM extraction purposes, fill in one attribute for 1040/1041 or unit assemblies
that get processed thru Hires. The attribute is called “exportEpmDocument” and it
should be set to yes. It can be found by doing edit attribute on the CAD assembly.
9. Make sure that there aren’t any old scanned drawings for your part or assembly in the
equipment viewer. If yes, make sure to revise it and obsolete the original copy.
10. BUY parts should be submitted on a separate CN by Mebane requirements on
January 2019

18
CN Checklist Rev13 12/16/2019

Bus Plating
1. 95% of the bus used in LV MCC is plated
2. Currently we have 3 plating options and they are:
 Skinny Silver - indicated with TC suffix
 Heavy silver – indicated with KT suffix
 Tin – Indicates with suffix SM
3. Legacy parts had 5 suffix which included TB and N suffix for Heavy tin and Bare
finish respectively
4. When we deal with bus parts, there are four gear parts that are needed on
windchill, one for the part number without any suffix, and one of each of the three
suffices listed above
5. Special change request to be used for creation of three suffices gears
6. I did mention 95%, so time to discuss the 5% and that will be ground bus
7. Ground bus to be created with 4 suffices; the three listed above plus “N” for bare or
no finish
8. If you create a subassembly including one piece of bus or more, then you are
required to create all different plating gears for the subassembly itself.

CN Affected and Resulting Objects

Affected Items:
1. All P/Ns affected by the change are placed in Affected Items. At the implementation
of the CN the factory will sort or dispose of the parts.
2. The latest revision of revised P/Ns should be added to the Affected Items.
3. Set the disposition for all the gear parts in the affected items. The three types of
dispositions are: On order, Work-in-process, and Finished.
4. Before setting the disposition to rework or repair please verify with the factory.
5. Quantity in stock is an important parameter when deciding on scraping parts.
6. Adding comments will help the manufacturing team understand the requirement
for repair or rework. You can say “refer to new rev” in the resulting objects.

23
CN Checklist Rev13 12/16/2019

Ex. Disposition Section Ex. Comments Section

Resulting Objects:
1. In this window you will add all the new created parts or revs with the exception of
parts intended for obsoleting.
2. The resulting objects tab is part of the liability documentation for the CN. Make
sure you are stating the facts clearly.
3. In the disposition you will select either Release or Obsolete depending on the
nature of the change.
24
CN Checklist Rev13 12/16/2019

4. Comments are very important and mandatory except for new parts. Refer to the
following points:
• For new revisions of existing parts, you are required to add a simple
explanation on what is different about these parts.
• Skip this tab for brand new P/Ns.
• Add “Rev Change Only” to instances of a family that are being revised but not
changing.
• All comments should be in English and Spanish.
• If a part is manufactured by one plant and bought by the other, include the
following note: Ex. “Make in Mebane, BUY in Edesa”.
5. The “New Name” tab is optional and to be filled-in only if you are not satisfied with
the current name of the CAD or Drawing. Gears must be renamed before adding to
the resulting objects.
6. A CN is limited to 15 gear parts or one family, whichever is larger.

25
CN Checklist Rev13 12/16/2019

BOM and Structure Issues

1. During Migration from Intralink, there was no plan to build a BOM structure for CAD
assemblies and sub-assemblies. So, it is required to build a BOM structure of any Sub-
assembly that you are planning to use in your main assembly.
2. When you create a CAD sub-assembly you are required to build a BOM structure in
the gear sub-assembly.
3. Use the compare to CAD structure feature in Windchill to verify the structure of the
gear sub-assembly.
4. Before releasing a replacement for a part in Windchill or even revising an old part, you
are supposed to confirm what assemblies it was used in and what impact it would
have on such assembly. So please do the following:
 Open the original CAD part in Windchill, select the “Related Objects” tab and
check the “Where Used” table.
 Open all these assemblies and replace the old component with new one. In case
of a revised item, open the assemblies in Creo and make sure it didn’t crash
because of constraint issues.

26
CN Checklist Rev13 12/16/2019

 In some situations, the “where used” tab will come back with zero results. If
that’s the case, open the part in SAP and use the where used Command “CS15”.
If it was structured in any assemblies, go back to Windchill and apply your
changes to the assemblies (changes should be done to gear and CAD in SYNC).

27
CN Checklist Rev13 12/16/2019

How to Avoid Legacy Issues

1. Refer to experienced Co-worker and ask about expected Legacy issues in the parts
you are using.
2. Do not use parts or assemblies that you know have Legacy issues. You don’t buy the
same brand pants twice if you didn’t like the way it fit the first time.
3. Before starting a project, plan enough time to fix Legacy issues in your timeline.
4. Just because the factory doesn’t complain about an issue, doesn’t mean that there
isn’t one.
5. We design for worst case tolerance, and manufacture within adequate tolerance.

STANDARD
PUNCH SIZES

- Hole sizes for a individual (non-tooled) parts should be consistent with one machine's punch set for lowest part cost.

- This avoids tool changes or moving the part to a second punch for certain hole sizes.

- Use of standard punch sizes will avoid extra setup labor in fabrication.

- All punch dimensions are in inches.

Part and CAD Naming

1. As indicated before the name attribute in windchill need to describe the part in
short.
2. By all means, DO NOT use the previous names as standard because they are
lacking basics of the definition.
3. So in short words define what the part is
4. The CAD and the gear should be 100% match but the gear is limited to 40
characters while the CAD is not.
5. The gear name is what is going to be in SAP while the CAD name is going to
Hires
6. Be professional in the name as the customer can ask for SAP BOM or Hires
BOM in some cases
7. The Best way is to do the following
A_B_C_D_E_F_G_H_I

36
CN Checklist Rev13 12/16/2019

A = part function – DR for door, Shlf for shelf, Barr for barrier, MTG BRKT for
mounting bracket.
B = Size of the part – 36HX20W , 22D or 48H whatever applies
C = Function of the unit where the part is being used – VFD, FVNR, FVR, SSS and
so on
D = specific of the function of the unit – NEMA SZ 1, R5, E2.2 or whatever
applies
E = Specifics of the part – XX for PD brackets, ¼” SCR, or whatever applies
F = the level, of the part if applies this is mainly for doors – part, weldment or
Assem
G = Nema rating – T1, T2, T12 or N3R
H = Premium features – AFM or AR, if no premium feature is offered then
ignore “H”

8. Use the following acronyms if needed

DR= Door
BARR= Barrier
BRKT= Bracket

How to Design for Proper wiring?

A. Internal Wiring:
1. Based on unit size decide on the application maximum current withdraw, if unit size is not
available, check with the EE on the team
2. Based on the current withdraw, go to UL845 and decide on the cable size needed
3. Once you have the size use the internal wiring bending radius table, available in
E9000_helps to decide the adequate spacing between components.

B.Customer wiring:
1. Locate the customer connection point
2. Find out the biggest cable size that this point can take
3. Using UL845, decide if the unit meets that cable size or not and list the max cable size in
Unit_size
4. If the unit doesn’t then calculate the distance from the first obstacle to the connection
point and use this value to decide the biggest cable you can use that will have this bending
radius
5. List that cable size in unit size.
39
CN Checklist Rev13 12/16/2019
6. If the customer wiring ended up smaller than the internal wiring, then the unit is invalid,
and size up by 6”.
