Narrator Hammerfest is a small town in the north of Norway. It is about 1,000 kilometres north of
the Arctic Circle. Only 9,407 people live here. In the winter it is light for only two or three hours. People
have breakfast, lunch, and dinner in the dark. In the summer, it is light for 24 hours, and people go to bed
very late. Some people play golf in the midnight sun!
Knut-Arne Iversen is from Hammerfest. He works for the Tourist Information Office.
Interviewer Do a lot of tourists come to Hammerfest?
Knut-Arne Yes, about 175,000 a year.
Interviewer When do they usually come?
Knut-Arne In the summer. We don’t have a lot of tourists in the winter!
Interviewer Is the winter very cold?
Knut-Arne No, not very, about –3 degrees. But we sometimes have a lot of snow, and the streets and
schools are closed.
Interviewer What do people do in the winter?
Knut-Arne We do a lot of sports – we ski a lot and we have snowmobiles. Children usually play
outside, but if it’s very cold, they play inside on their computer or watch TV. In the evening we usually
stay at home and relax, or go and see friends. But the winter is difficult for old people.
Interviewer What do people do in the summer?
Knut-Arne Life is completely different. It’s light for 24 hours a day, and the weather is sometimes
very hot. People are outside all the time. We fish, and walk, and have barbecues. We don’t swim because
the water is very cold – maybe only ten degrees. People don’t sleep a lot, and young children say ‘I don’t
want to go to bed. It isn’t dark.’
Interviewer Do you prefer the summer or the winter?
Knut-Arne In the winter it’s nice to be at home with your family and friends. But I prefer the
summer.
Interviewer Do you like life in Hammerfest?
Knut-Arne Yes. Life here is easy. It’s quiet and beautiful, and the air is clean. But the winter is very
long, and the summer is very short. I’m not sure if I will stay here forever.

Interviewer Mr Soriano, what differences are there between Benidorm today and Benidorm in the 1950s?
Mr Soriano There are very big differences. For example, today there are 65,000 people who live in
Benidorm. In the 1950s there were only about 3,000 people.
Interviewer Wow! That’s a big difference! What about tourists?
Mr Soriano Today there are four million tourists a year. In the 1950s there were only maybe 300 tourists.
And they were Spanish. Now tourists come from all over the world.
Interviewer Was there an airport near Benidorm in the 1950s?
Mr Soriano No, there wasn’t an airport then. Today there is a big international airport in Alicante, which is
only 50 kilometres from Benidorm.

cafés. There was nothing to do.
English friend Where did you stay? In a hotel?
Kelly I wanted to stay in a good hotel, but Jeff wanted something typically English so we stayed in a bed and
breakfast.
English friend How was it?
Kelly Well, the room was really small. And the breakfast was terrible!
English friend Terrible? English breakfasts are usually very good!
Kelly Yes, and that’s what we wanted, a typical English breakfast, you know bacon and eggs, sausages. But
there was only cereal, cold toast, and tea. There wasn’t any coffee! I tell you, the weekend was a complete
disaster.

Female broadcaster And here’s Mark with the weather.
Mark Well tomorrow is going to be a very mixed day. In the north of England it’s going to be cold, maybe no
more than three or four degrees and it’s probably going to snow. In the east it’s also going to be cold, but it isn’t
going to snow, it’s going to rain. So remember to take an umbrella if you live in the east of England. In the south
and the west the weather is going to be very different. In the west it’s going to be a beautiful day. It’s going to be
cold, but it’s going to be sunny. And in the south it’s going to be sunny too, and it’s going to be hot, maybe 20
degrees. So I hope you all have a good day…
