1. Solve the following. (15 marks)


a) Luke had £20 with him when he went shopping. He bought two birthday cards at £2.70 each ,
one toy at £6.50 each and 1 book at £5.75 each. How much money did he have left after he bought
these goods. Round off the total amount up to 2 s.f.
Solution : total spent = 2.70 x 2 + 6.50 + 5.75 = 17.65
Amount left = 20 - 17.65 = £ 2.35

b) In an algebraic pyramid the expression in each block is found by adding the expressions in the
two blocks below it. Complete this pyramid.

c) Matt is training for a race. He runs 3 days in one week.


Matt runs 1 1 miles on Monday. Then he runs 12 miles on Thursday. Finally he runs 2 1 miles on

Solution : Total = 1 1 + 12 + 2 1 = 3 +5 + 11

= 3x15 + 5x10 + 11x6
