Rectangular Tank Calc

This document provides calculations for the thickness of plates and stiffening frames for a rectangular tank based on standards. It calculates the required thickness of side and bottom plates, as well as a top plate, checking deflection and stress requirements. Stiffening frames are determined to be required for the side plates based on deflection.

Calculation of rectangular tank based on Roark and Young (7 th Edition)

1- Calculation for thickness of side plates and bottom plate

L= 4500 mm = 177.2″
W= 1000 mm = 39.4″
H= 900 mm = 35.4″
G= 1.78
Material = SA-240 316L → S= 115.1 MPa = 16694 psi
H/ L= 900/4500 = 0.2 → β = 0.024 & α = 0.00027
t= L √ (β H 0.036 G) / S → t= 177.2 √ (0.024 x 35.4 x 0.036 x 1.78) / 16694
→ t req. = 8.1 mm → Selected / Actual plate thk. = ta = 10 mm

Note: Since tank entire surface is supported (mounted skid) selected plate for side plate
(10 mm) will be used also for the bottom plate.

Maximum deflection = α 0.036GHL4/ Eta3

= (0.00027 x 0.036 x 1.78 x 35.4 x 177.24) / (27500002 x 0.393) = 0.37in.=9.4 mm
→ Stiffening Frame is required

Design of stiffening frame:

w= 0.036 GH2 / 2 = (0.036 x 1.78 x 35.42) / 2 = 40.2 in.2
R1= 0.3 w = 0.3 x 40.2 = 12.06 in.2
R2 = 0.7 w = 0.7 x 40.2 = 28.14 in.2
I min = R1 L4 / 192 E ta = (12.06 x 177.24) / (192 x 27500002 x 0.39) = 5.7 in.4 = 237 cm4
2- Calculation for thickness of top plate

b= 1000 mm = 39.4″
a= 4500 mm = 177.2″
P= 0.19 psi
a/b= 4500/1000= 4.5 → Acc.to table for Case 3 (All edges simply supported, uniform load):
β3= 0.7445 & ɣ3 = 0.1408
бb = β3 P b2 / t2 = (0.7445 x 0.19 x 39.32) / 0.392 = 1436.5 psi = 9.9 MPa
Fb = 0.66 Sy = 0.66 x 172 = 113.52
As бb < Fb → t selected = 0.39 in. = 10 mm is sufficient

Maximum deflection :
ᵹ= ɣ3 (P/E) (b4/t3) = 0.1408 x (19/27500002) x (39.44/ 0.393) = 0.039 in. = 1 mm
→ Stiffening for top plate is not required
