CONTINUOUS BEAMS
MOMENT DISTRIBUTION METHOD
PRESENTER:- S.D. Paulse (Mrs)
LECTURER:- STY300S/STY260S 1
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:-
• Calculate the unknown moments at the supports in the indeterminate
beams subjected to:-
CONTINUOUS BEAMS:-
External loads without sinking of supports
CLAPEYRON’s THREE
MOMENT METHOD
External loads with sinking of supports
• Find reactions for the indeterminate beam.
• Draw the shear force and bending moment diagram.
Compiled by S.D.Paulse (Mrs) 2
Limitations of Clapeyron’s method
• For every unknown moment at the support, a
Clapeyron equation has be set up.
• Tedious analytical method if there are
numerous unknown moments.
• Method becomes a challenge in
indeterminate frames.
• ---→ Alternative method for statically
indeterminate beams with many unknowns.

• Steps in the Analysis Process

Overview:- Moment Distribution
Method
• Step 1:
Calculate the E.I value for each span (each
segment between supports).
Compiled by S.D. Paulse (Mrs) 5
Overview:- Moment Distribution Method
• Step 2:
Calculate the stiffness factor (K value) for each
span (each segment between supports).
K value:- governed by how each segment is
supported and where positioned in the
continuous beam →→→→ Rules (Pages 1 & 2 of
your notes)

Moment Distribution Analysis Method
• Step 3:
Calculate the distribution factor (D factor) on
either side of a support/joint.
D factor:- based on a set of standard rules
(dependent on how beam is supported on each
end).
D factor is calculated (when standard rules do
not apply).

• Step 4:
Fix all the supports on the indeterminate
beam.

Moment Distribution Analysis
Method
Separate the indeterminate beam into single
span beams. Note moments develop at the fixed
ends.

Moment Distribution Analysis
Method
• Calculate the fixed end moments (FEM) for
each span. (Refer to the table on page 3 and 4
of notes).

Moment Distribution Analysis
Method
• Step 5:
Set up a moment distribution table.
1st row:- Label the supports
2nd row:- Table Member End connected to each
support
3rd row:- Table Dist. Factor at each end of the support
4th row:- Table FEM
5th row:- Table Msinking

Moment Distribution Analysis
Method
Perform a set of Balance/Distribute/Carry-
Over iterations until the last line ends with
all zeros (this should occur on a
Distribution line).
Compiled by S.D. Paulse (Mrs) 12
Moment Distribution Analysis
Method
• Balance
Add all the moments at each support.
Multiply the answer by -1.
Compiled by S.D. Paulse (Mrs) 13
Moment Distribution Analysis
Method
• Distribute the balanced moments to
each end connected to a support/joint.
Compiled by S.D. Paulse (Mrs) 14
Moment Distribution Analysis
Method
• Carry-Over over moments from one end
of a span to the other end of the same
span. →→→ carry over rules pages 4-5.

Moment Distribution Analysis
Method
• Total up the columns.
Add FEM’s + Distributed Moments + Carry
Over Moments.
Refer to this presentation and your notes
for every exercise you work through.
