𝗚𝗘𝗧 𝗧𝗢 𝗞𝗡𝗢𝗪 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗝𝗔𝗚𝗨𝗔𝗥𝗦 | 𝐓𝐮𝐦𝐢𝐫𝐚 𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐬, 𝐬𝐢 𝐒𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐤𝐚 𝐛𝐞𝐬𝐭!

With the continuous victories of USJ-R in the 23rd CESAFI Basketball Season, it’s as if the
USJ-R Baby Jaguars are flashing their sharp senses and claws in every single match! Rest
assured, Josenians, because it is undeniable that the esteemed 16-man team is indeed
exerting its finest efforts and continuously embodying the core value of excellence as it is
composed of many talented and goal-oriented players, one of which is Ralph Jaye M.
Sampan

Coincidentally, Sampan’s position as Power Forward is the exact same position as his idol,
Jayson Tatum, who belongs to the highly recognized professional basketball team, Boston
Celtics. Furthermore, his favorite food, Chicken Wings, is surely one of the reasons why he’s
grown to a towering height of 6 '0. Apart from his height and extraordinary skills in
basketball, it is no surprise that Sampan is the best, remaining consistent in securing
trophies and coming home victorious alongside the team, and it’s all because of his life
motto: “Stop dreaming and start doing”.

Like Sampan, let us not only dream but also start doing as we embark on the continuous
pursuit of excellence. Josenians, let us all unleash our true Josenian spirit as we send
thunderous roars and raise our cheers as a form of support for our Baby Jaguars’ upcoming
basketball games. 𝑹𝒐𝒂𝒓 𝒍𝒐𝒖𝒅𝒆𝒓, 𝑱𝒂𝒈𝒖𝒂𝒓𝒔!

𝗨𝗦𝗝-𝗥 𝗕𝗦𝗣 𝗢𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗶𝗻 18𝘁𝗵 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗰𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗝𝗮𝗺𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗲, 𝗖𝗲𝗯𝘂 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗹 𝗕𝗮𝗴𝘀
𝗠𝗮𝗷𝗼𝗿 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀

From December 11 to 17, the Boy Scouts of the Philippines (BSP) Cebu Council, of
which the University of San Jose Recoletos’ BSP Unit is part of, participated in the 18th
National Scout Jamboree at Passi City, Province of Iloilo. With the theme: “Youth
Engagement: Sustaining Relevance and Strengthening Resilience”, this monumental
event united scout councils from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao to widen their horizons,
learn new things, and promote the Boy Scouts of the Philippines (BSP) values through
various activities and challenges that not only tested but also nurtured the scouts’ skills
and teamwork.

Firstly, the athletic skills of the scouts were tested through Sports; karate, volleyball, and
basketball. Secondly, social skills were also fostered and strengthened through the
Cross-Cultural Exchange Program in Passi City where the scouts embraced and
engrossed themselves in Iloilo’s culture, including learning about Ilo-ilo’s local dances
and Passi City’s unique cultural tattoos. Moreover, the scouts engaged in the
Messengers of Peace activities, promoting the goal of scouting which is to achieve
peace and prosperity around the world. In addition, the leaders attended a short seminar
on sexual abuse and sexual intimacy, issues which are timely in our nation, promoting
awareness and prevention as young leaders who are at the forefront of change for the
future. Consequently, they reviewed the basics of safety, took part in an obstacle course
challenge, and hiked the 6-7-kilometer trail together. Last but not least, they all
participated in the highly anticipated module of all scouts, the Aquatics and Water Fun,
wherein the scouts’ swimming abilities were both showcased and honed through aquatic
games and training.

Amidst the sea of tents, the Cebu Council stood out with its remarkable achievements.
This goes to show that the scouts from the Queen City of the South have showcased
their talents and commitment to scouting. Securing notable positions including:

•Grand Campfire Presentation 1st Runner-Up: The outstanding showcase of their yell,
song, and stunt has secured them the 1st Runner-up position.

•Fancy Drill Exhibition 3rd Runner-Up: Precision, discipline, and synchronized

movements defined the Cebu Council's Fancy Drill Exhibition, earning them the
prestigious title of 3rd Runner-Up.

When questioned about a valuable insight gained by the scouts during this significant
event and its potential application to one’s responsibilities as a student-leader, Snr. Sct.
John Rafael Tortusa, the 1st-Brigade Commander, articulated the following response, "I
learned how to think of possible scenarios, delegate tasks efficiently, and value
friendships with other schools and regions at the Jamboree. I can apply these lessons as
a student-leader by assigning tasks effectively, setting reasonable time limits, making
new friends, and being proactive in solving problems.”

As the sun sets on the last day of the 18th National Jamboree in Passi City, Iloilo, the
USJ-R BSP Unit returns to Cebu with not only a collection of awards but also a sense of
pride and wonderful memories from an enriching and inspiring jamboree experience. We
congratulate the BSP Cebu Council and our very own dynamic BSP Unit for their unified
efforts throughout their successful and insightful journey in this year’s National Scout
Jamboree. Let us all view our fellow Josenians’ honorable participation and inspiring
journey as a reminder to remain resilient and work as one as we serve our motherland
and build the foundation of tomorrow. Adelante!

JANUARY 1, 2024
𝗬𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰: 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿, 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗺𝗲, 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀!

As the long hand strikes twelve, colorful fireworks start blasting into the sky and lighting up
the night. The atmosphere is filled by echoing shouts and laughter as everyone rejoices,
blowing their trumpets and revving their vehicles to start the year optimistically. Let's
embrace the new year with open arms, preparing to venture a new chapter and waiting for
thrilling adventures and memories rich with experience being fostered with our new selves.

When the clock hits midnight, our aspirations renew with promising resolutions. Most of us
Filipinos participate in traditions that have been long engraved in our culture. The twelve
circular fruits on our table manifest twelve prosperous months each year. Additionally, polka
dotted clothing serves the purpose of welcoming the new year with hopes of luck on our
side. Furthermore, familiar beliefs are also observed such as switching lights on to ensure a
happier and brighter year, consuming noodles or pancit to lengthen our life, and making
loud noises with vehicles and colorful torotots which is believed to ward off evil—allowing us
to start this new year with a clean slate. There are many more traditions unmentioned and
numerous beliefs we differ in, but one thing is certain—we are all unified in hoping and
praying for this year to be better than the last.

Let us start this year with enthusiasm—looking forward to the vision of a prolific tomorrow.
Let us also express gratitude for the past twelve months that we went through with
resilience, for the people that we have created wholesome memories with, and for this brand
new beginning that the Almighty has yet again given us. With blazing hearts and determined
minds, let's wave goodbye to the eventful 2023 that we had and flip the page to 2024 with
hopes of healthier, happier, and heartier days ahead.

𝐈𝐂𝐘𝐌𝐈 | 𝗨𝗦𝗝-𝗥 𝗝𝗛𝗦 𝗗𝗲𝗽𝘁 𝗖𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗯𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗲𝗰𝗵 𝗙𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗹 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰

On the 26th of January 2024, marks the day where remarkable performances from the
different levels of the Junior High School Department during the English Week Culminating
Activity, with the theme "Journeying Together in Transforming the World through Effective
Communication" were bestowed. From Oration to Josenian Talk (JTalk), these
performances—individual or group, served as testament to how our Junior High School
students excelled not only in the realm of academics but also in communication.

In the morning, the Oration, Declamation, and the Extemporaneous Speech contests took
place in the St. Ezekiel Moreno Building AVR, where different students from the JHS
department performed their remarkable pieces under the limelight.
The respective competitions highlighted the theme of this event, and displayed how
impactful communication is in our lives. The winners were chosen as follows: Champion, 1st
Runner Up, and 2nd Runner Up. Although the winners were awarded with certificates and
prizes, there is no denying that all of the participants shined and were dedicated to be heard.

The Spoken Poetry, Dramatic Reading, Infomercial, and J-Talk were held in the afternoon in
the University of San Jose-Recoletos Auditorium where different grade levels from the JHS
department cooperated and unified to produce outstanding performances. Moreover, the
theme was greatly emphasized through different creative representations. All the same, the
efforts of the different groups that did not clinch the places don't go unnoticed as their
performances were as excellent and bright as the winners!

In the end, what truly made the English Week Culminating Activity a huge success were the
collective efforts of the English Department, and of course the dedication, time, and passion
of our JHS students. Truly, communication is the way to brighten and broaden our horizons.
Let us change the world one word at a time! Excel and continue to strive on, Josenians! This
just marks the beginning of our journey towards achieving our goals. Let us all continue to
uphold the value of excellence and never forget to use your voice to shine. Adelante!

FEBRUARY 11, 2024

𝐋𝐎𝐎𝐊 | As the long-awaited 2024 Mr. and Ms. JHS Intramurals Competition fastly
approaches, so does our enthusiasm that entails excitement and support. To further the
depth of our knowledge of our beloved representatives, let us get to know the beauties that
are representing the Juniors.

Let's welcome the "Queen of the Vast Waters", Ms. Intramurals Grade 9 Representative,
Jasmine Abigail Lim. Her beauty and talents are not the only things that make her shine in
the limelight, but also her unfazed determination to pursue her goals. Unlike the uncertainty
that lies within the deep waters, Jasmine’s plans are vivid, "My ambition is to become a flight
attendant. I aspire to be one because it will allow me to witness the beauty of the world as I
go across various destinations." Moreover, when asked "What is beauty?", she delivered an
answer emphasizing the importance of seeing an individual through a thorough lens, "I
believe that beauty is something found within a person. It should not only be seen from the
outside but should also be seen deeper within as it is the reflection of one’s heart and
character."

One must not forget that a queen rules alongside her king. Let’s also get to know our equally
talented, persistent, and charming Mr. JHS Intramurals Grade 9 Representative, Daniel R.
Limalima. Finding your true ambition in life is not an easy task, but it seems that he has truly
found his, "My ambition is to be a disciplined and successful individual who is able to render
assistance to other people." Additionally, when the topic of success was tackled, his
response was simple yet sentimental, "Success, to me, is the achievement that has gone
through failures, defeat, frustration, and mistakes. This can be achieved by hard work,
determination, commitment, and prayers."

Like the duality of deep and indefinite waters, the Juniors will definitely put on a fight,
remaining calm throughout their preparation, but strong and wild during the competition. If
you want to see how the Juniors will flood the stage, catch them this February 13 at the
Recoletos Coliseum for the Mr. and Ms. JHS Intramurals 2024.

𝗝𝗨𝗦𝗧 𝗡𝗢𝗪 | Josenian families gather as brothers and sisters in today's holy mass, marking
the First Sunday of Lent and celebrating the commencement of this year's JHS Family Day.
This eucharistic celebration, presided by Rev. Fr. Jose Alden Alipin, OAR, gives us the time
to repent and reflect as one Josenian family.

As we celebrate these events simultaneously, let us also embody this year's JHS Family Day
theme, “Unity in Diversity as One Josenian Family”, for it is in moments where we spiritually
bond that we become closer and stronger than ever.

𝘉𝘺: 𝘓𝘪𝘢𝘮 𝘒𝘪𝘳𝘬 𝘌𝘴𝘭𝘦𝘳

As different stars and planets dazzle in the universe,

There exists a blue-green marble floating in solitary,
Eternally shining through the sun's radiant burst,
Standing under the limelight like a throne that no one shall carry,
This is our home and planet, Earth!
As we look at our blue-green planet in space,
We will truly be mesmerized by its ethereal daze.
From lush and dense forests that span for miles on end,
Cultivated and filled with diverse organisms that never rest,
To oceans that fill the world with such mystery,
Sometimes, we never appreciate its true beauty.

Minerals found deep within our planet,

It's truly the treasure that's the heart of our world.
Mountains stand sturdy and tall,
Giving us a breathtaking view when we climb its summit.

However, a curse has been born,

Seemingly looking like a blessing to the world,
Causing our world to be torn apart,
A result of our apathetic hearts!

Oh, how could we do this to our mother Earth,

Where our atmosphere is poisoned,
Garbage fills the streets and oceans,
We live as if we have anywhere to go when our planet perishes.

Hope is dimming and dwindling,

Our planet is barely surviving.
Why did we change our destiny,
Just to fulfill the desires of humanity?

However, we shall not falter for hope still faintly glimmers,

We still have a chance to fix this and make amends.
We shall observe Earth hour as one,
There is change that can still be done.

Turn off your devices and conserve electricity,

We can change our dark destiny,
We may be able to meet our future,
With bliss and harmony!

JUNE 2, 2024

𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐡: Pushing Equality towards a better Society

“Race, gender, religion, sexuality, we are all people and that’s it. We’re all people. We’re all
equal.” These words by Connor Franta, a known LGBTQ+ advocate truly illustrates the
picture that we are all made equal in this world, whether we like it or not, as we are made out
of flesh, skin, and bones, regardless if we have different perspectives, ideals, appearance,
sexuality, and gender. Regardless of who we are and where we come from, we deserve
equality and we deserve to be accepted. We welcome the month of June by celebrating the
unbended confidence and resilience of the LGBTQ+ community.

The community continues to battle inequality, prejudice, and hate crimes—constantly being
subjected to public scrutiny and abuse. However, the individuals within the community
continue to live by their principles and have found solidarity in shared experiences and
beliefs. Living in a society where a culture of discrimination greatly manifests, the queer
community is at the forefront of fighting for equality and LGBTQIA+ rights.

Let us embrace the beauty of diversity and appreciate the courageous individuals,
exceptional talents, and the pride within the queer community. We move forward from a
black and white past that limits our exploration beyond the horizon by celebrating our identity
and that of others. In our quest for peace, may we find inspiration from the unity of the
LGBTQ+ community in raising their flag and pioneering towards equality. In a crowd of black
and white clouds, be a rainbow and be who you are.
