Study of IRC -IRC -SP13:2004

Clause Discription

1 .2. 1 Bridges : Bridge is a structure having a total length above 6 m between the inner faces of the dirt walls for carrying traffic or
other moving loads over a depression or obstruction such as channel, road or railway.
1 .2.2. Minor Bridge : A minor bridge is a bridge having a total length of upto 60 m.
1 .2.3. Small Bridge : A small bridge is a bridge where the overall length of the bridge between the inner faces of dirt walls is upto 30 m
and where individual span is not more than 10 m.
1 .2.4. Culvert : Culvert is a cross-drainage structure having a total length of 6 m or less between the inner faces of the dirt walls or
extreme ventway boundaries measured at right angles thereto.
Study of IRC -112:2011
Clause Discription

This Code deals with the structural use of plain cement concrete, reinforced concrete, prestressed concrete and
4.1 composite construction using concrete elements in bridges and is applicable to all structural elements using normal
weight concrete (density in the range of (24 ± 4 kN/m^) and made using cements, aggregate, mineral admixtures,
chemical admixtures and water, as given in the Section dealing with material specifications in the Code.

Design Service Life

Nomenclature of Design Useful life Example
Service life
Normal 100 years or more All bridges unless otherwise specifically classfied
by owner
5.8.1
1 .) Bridge on temporary access roads
Temporary 10 years or less
2 .) Bridge for construction facility
1 .) Bridge rehabilated for a short term
Up to 20 years or as specified by the
Special Application owner 2 .) Bridge for projects / industries with planned
economic life of short duration

Strength, stress-strain diagrams, modulus of elasticity and ductility

The minimum strength, as specified in relevant IS Standards, which is either the yield strength in case of mild steel or
6.2.2 0.2 percent proof strength in case of high yield steel, is notionally fallen as the characteristic strength f yk.
The modulus of elasticity can be taken as 200 GPa for design purposes.
gs is taken as 1.15 for Basic combination and Seismic combination, and 1.0 for
Accidental combination

Stress-strain relationship and modulus of elasticity

The Poisson's ratio for uncracked concrete may be taken as 0.2 and that for cracked concrete as zero.
6.4.2.5 In general, the effects of long term loading (due to creep) shall be obtained separately and added to those obtained
from short temi analysis. As a simplification for the overall analysis of structure (not for local analysis), the value of E cm
can be modified by a factor(1/ 1 + f)accounting for long term creep effects where f is the creep co-efficient .

Maximum prestressing force

7.9 The maximum force applied to tendon at active end during tensioning, shall not exceed 90 percent of 0.1 percent
proof load or (proof stress ). In exceptional conditions temporary overstressing during stressing operation is permitted
up to 95 percent of 0.1 percent of proof load ( or proof stress), provided that the accuracy of measurement is ensured
to be within +- 5 percent. Maximum prestressing force P 0 applied to structure immediately after transfer (i.e after
losses due to elastic shortening and anchorage slip ) shall not be greater than 75 percent of f yk or 0.85 of 0.1 percent
proof load whichever is lesser.
