Design Report for NH-103 Pier Foundations

This document provides a design report for the substructure and foundation of Pier No. LP1 and RP5 of a National Highway bridge. It includes the basic design data such as span dimensions, material properties, soil data, and salient levels. The substructure is designed to support a composite steel girder on one side and an RCC girder on the other. The report introduces the project, provides the basic design data used, and calculates the finished road level based on the revised superstructure design.

INTRODUCTION: -
The substructure no. LP1 and RP5 has been designed to cater superstructure of
RDSO standard composite girder bearing RDSO Drawing NO. RDSO/B-11775 on one side
and 18m (exp. Joint to exp. Joint) RCC on other side. As the carriage width of RDSO
superstructure is 0.5 (shy distance) + 8.5 (Carriage width) + 0.5 (shy distance) = 9.5m < 9.6m,
in terms of IRC 6:2017, and for RCC girder it is 7.5m substructure has been designed for 2
lane traffic (maximum of one lane 70R and two lane of Class A vehicle). The substructure has
also been checked for Special Class Vehicle of 385 tonne.
As the superstructure is changed from initially approved GAD of ROB to allow Special
Class Vehicle over it and RDSO available girder for the same has been used, FRL has been
revised and calculated as;
i). Rail Level = 50.477 m (As per approved GAD)
ii). Minimum Vertical clearance required = 6.525 m (As per IR-SOD 2004)
iii). Total depth of girder = 1.581 m
iv). Soffit level difference between end girder to mid girder = 2.5×2×2.5% = 0.125 m.
v). Deck slab thickness = 0.250 m.
vi). Wearing course = 0.075 m.
FRL = 59.033 m.
This FRL has been adopted in detail design calculation of substructure.
ROB has two type Carriage width, one above Railway span (RDSO girder) of 8.5m
along with 0.5 m shy distance on both side (sum 9.5 m) and other beyond railway span and
throughout road alignment (PSC girder) of 7.5m carriage width. For smooth movement of
traffic, the left side carriage end has been kept aligned and extra carriage width over railway
span shall be kept inaccessible by providing kerb, aligned to kerb of outer (non-railway) spans.
Analysis of Live Load has been done with effective carriage width i.e., 7.5 m.

DESIGN OF WALL TYPE PIER
Dimension of wall:
Pier shaft width, b = 1500.00 mm
Pier shaft length, L = 5000.00 mm
L < 4b -Thus the section is RCC wall

Height of Pier shaft, h0 = 9072 mm -height upto Pier cap level

.'. Effective height, heff. = 12700.8 mm -considering free rotation & translation at top

Slenderness ratio, heff/b = 8.5 .'. Wall is short

Min. eccentricity for wall, emin = 0.05b -minimum eccentricity due to construction error
= 75 mm

-The resistance to applied axial force & moment on the wall can be calculated based upon the interaction curve plots
for coulms as given in SP 16

Design inputs
Dimensions & r/f details:
Abutment width, B = 1500 mm
Abutment length, L = 5000 mm
No. Bars along width (B) = 28
-total no. of layers (no need to substract anything)
No. Bars along length (L) = 100
Bar diameter along φ(B1) = 25 mm
width φ(B2) = 25 mm
Bar diameter along φ(L1) 25 -compression face
length φ(L2) 25 -tension face
c' = 50 mm -effective cover to r/f
fck = 35 MPa
fy = 500 MPa φ(D1)
Calculations:
Total no. of bars = 252
Bar spacing @ width = 108 mm
Bar spacing @ depth = 100 mm φ(B1) φ(B2)
