INTRODUCTION

A smart city is a city that uses technology to provide services and solve city problems. A smart
city does things like improve transportation and accessibility, improve social services, promote
sustainability, and give its citizens a voice.
Though the term “smart cities” is new, the idea isn’t. Ancient Roman cities actually used
elements of the concept, such as using technology to make their citizens’ lives easier. Aqueducts
and water drainage systems are just two ways they did that.
The main goals of a smart city are to improve policy efficiency, reduce waste and inconvenience,
improve social and economic quality, and maximize social inclusion.
The concepts of ‘smart’ and ‘intelligent’ cities are treated in the available literature as being
quite relative. However, in ‘smart’ cities, the emphasis is placed more on embedded systems,
sensors and interactive media that support knowledge diffusion and interaction. ‘Intelligent’
cities, on the other hand, seem to rely more on collective /collaborative intelligence, innovation
systems and web-based collaborative spaces. In both cases, the focus is on the integration of the
three dimensions of urban space i.e. the physical, institutional and digital dimension.

4
FEATURES OF SMART CITY

• Smart cities will promote the use of technology, information and data to enhance and
improve its infrastructure and services. This includes access to resources like water and
electricity. Providing homes that are affordable to all, provision of proper education and health
services, and increase IT connectivity.
• A larger number of government services will be made more accessible to people.
Services will be offered online and will provide more accountability, transparency and more
involvement of the public. Formation of E-groups will allow people to voice their opinions and
receive feedback, monitor programs and activities with the help of cyber tour worksites.
• An increase in access to public transportation and creative solutions such as smart
parking, intelligent management, and integrated modal transport. Smart cities will be more
pedestrian and cyclist friendly with key administrative services at shorter, walkable distances.
• Smart cities will redevelop or develop unplanned and poorly planned areas such as slums,
with a vision to make cities safer and less disaster-prone. With the use of video surveillance,
criminal activity will be tracked, and drastic security measures will be taken to protect women,
children, and senior citizens.
• Urban hear effects will be reduced by creating and maintaining parks, playgrounds, and
recreational spaces. Living spaces will be made to accommodate the growing population and also
enhance its standard of living.
• Infrastructure will be more sustainable and eco-friendly, by reducing the amount of waste
generated and also through mindful consumption of natural resources.

IMPA
CT OF SMART CITIES

1. Better transportation services: A smart city has the potential to drastically improve the
current level of transportation throughout a city. It will have better traffic management,
the ability to track public transportations and serve its citizens better with constant
information and low prices.
2. Safer Communication: A smart city will have the most technological advances and
partnerships with the private sector will benefit society since there will be lesser criminal
activity. The example of such technology is license plate recognition, connected crime
centers, shooting detectors, better emergency services, and body cameras.
3. Reduced environmental footprint: A smart city has thousands of energy-efficient
buildings that can improve the air quality, use renewable energy sources, and decrease
the dependence on non-renewable energy sources. These will help to decrease the
ecological impact we have on the environment.
4. More digital equity: People must have access to high-speed internet services at
affordable prices and devices. If they have access to public Wi-fi in local areas in the city,
all residents will have equal opportunities.
5. Economic development opportunities: Investing in smart cities will lead to improving
their regional and global competitiveness and attract new residents and improve business.
Since the entire city will have access to an open data platform, information, etc.
companies will flourish. They can make informed decisions with the available
technologies and lead to economic development.
6. Improvement of infrastructure: Old roads, buildings, highways, bridges require
massive investments to maintain their state and increase their useful life. But, with the

6
help of smart technologies, cities will have the ability to analytically predict and identify
the areas that can cause infrastructure failures before it occurs.
7. Job opportunities: A smart city will have many businesses and job opportunities since
the people will get equal access to basic resources such as transportation, internet
connection, and job offers.
8. Decrease of crime: Since the authorities can monitor the dealings of people closely with
the help of technologies, there will be a reduced amount of crime. Besides, crime
increases when there are fewer jobs and more unemployed people. However, if job
opportunities increase, it will simultaneously lead to a decrease in crime.

SOME DRAWBACKS OF SMART CITY

1. Less Privacy - While there will be an immense advancement in monitoring people in

public and open spaces, privacy is a concern that must be kept in mind while living in a
smart city. Intelligent and advanced monitoring systems with security cameras almost
everywhere will throw away the concept of privacy and personal space into the air.

2. Social Control - Agencies and bodies which will be in charge of tracking and capturing
the data collected from security cameras will have an edge over others. Be it the
government itself or even a private agency, they will have the power to control public
data and can also manipulate them according to their needs.

3. Blind Trust on Network - The connected and always secured nature of a Smart city will
always be there with a citizen living there. However, excessive trust in the network will
decrease the decision-making among people and gradually make them incompetent. They
would not be able to react and make a decision by themselves when these tools become
unusable or if they are in a place where technology is not that developed.

4. Pre-Commercial Process - Although smart cities will never suffer from cash influx,
most of the technologies will be in their pre-commercial stages. Hence, smart cities will
face a shortage of skills and capacity related to technology.

5. Trained Humans - Living a life is a natural habit that humans adapt right from birth.
Well, being a fan of Smart cities and not being aware of new technological advancements
will not help you in this case. You may have to undergo training to utilize all the
technologies and the features installed in a Smart city.

SUGGESTOINS FOR SMART SCITIES

 Smart Traffic Control and Real-Time Updates

Traffic jams are, without a doubt, one of the leading problems of modern cities. They
cause stress, time and money loss, and on top of all, additional CO2 is emitted into our
atmosphere. But what if we told you there’s a technology that could forever end traffic
jams? This innovative technology is based on smart control of traffic lights.
 Automatic Leakage Management
What we need as a society is a smartly integrated Water Management System with which
we could monitor water usage in real-time. With this leakage management, it will be
easier to control water consumption, reduce leaks and ultimately, save water and money
from being wasted.
 Waste Management
One of the central problems which follow the creation of smart cities is waste
management. With these smart bins, it is easier to monitor the capacity of the bins, and
effectively avoid overstuffing them. the population increase in the last decade, it can get
quite challenging to keep the streets clean. We need a smart management system that
shows real-time data about different-purpose bins across the city. This way, they always
know which bin to empty and when.

 Green Buildings and Rooftop Wind Turbines

Green buildings are specifically “designed to reduce or eliminate negative impacts on our
climate and natural environment.” An interesting fact about green buildings is that they
cost less while the property’s value increases.

 Electric Transport and Vehicles

Although electric cars are more part of the present instead of being a mere concept of the
future, they are still not fully adapted in our society. With zero carbon dioxide emission
and low-cost maintenance, these cars will make an everyday ride in the big cities far
more enjoyable. On top of that, EVs that are produced today already have a regenerative
braking system. Simply explained - every time a driver hits the break, a part of the
electricity “returns” back into the battery.

9
CONCLUSION

Smart cities are currently perceived as key to achieving sustainable urban

development goals. Namely, reducing resource consumption, reusing
resources, and recycling waste- all with the assistance of technology are
promised to improve the residents' quality of life. However, it is important to
understand which population the smart city is targeting. Along with
obtaining smart technologies, and providing smart health and smart
education, a smart city must also have smart social sustainability which
accounts for fair accessibility of public services, employment and social
interactions. Social sustainability in Songdo IBD could be achieved through
offering affordable house rental options in the area, along with providing
trainings for lower-skilled workers, and developing collaborative initiatives
for both foreign and local talents. A smart city shouldn't exclude certain
groups of the population, but rather bring people of different backgrounds
together to co-create in the vast times of technology development- all to
improve the quality of life for all residents.
