CHAPTER I

Executive Summary

In this report we take a look at how tourism is growing and developing in

Maragondon, Cavite. This paper establishes Maragondon’s unique tourism

profile. This includes famous landmarks such as the Our Lady of Assumption

Parish Church, The Bonifacio Shrine and Eco-Tourism Park and the Kaybiang

Tunnel. Mt. Marami and the Maragondon River Cruise are highly recommended

for tourists who enjoy breathtaking sceneries of nature.

The third chapter goes deeper into each location with a tourism site evaluation

based on the Tourism Guidebook of the Department of Tourism, covering

aspects such as accessibility, facilities for visitors and overall visitor experience.

The fourth chapter pinpoints the challenges holding back these tourist spots

from reaching their potential. These issues could range from infrastructure to

lack of promotion or facilities that need improvement.

By recognizing these problems in the fifth chapter, targets and objectives will be

set for enhancing tourism in Maragondon. These objectives are geared towards

boosting economic and social benefits from tourism while ensuring the town's

heritage and natural beauty.

The sixth chapter lays out the proposed strategies to tackle these challenges

and meet our goals successfully. This chapter will focus on enhancing

infrastructure, launching marketing campaigns and promoting practices to

engage the community and forming partnerships between private sectors will be

key to ensuring lasting benefits.

The final chapter (Chapter 7) provides a summary of our findings, conclusions

drawn from our analysis, and specific recommendations for Maragondon's

tourism development. The eighth chapter provides a complete list of references

used throughout the paper.

By implementing the proposed strategies, Maragondon can position itself as a

well-rounded tourist destination that caters to diverse interests. This

development will not only attract visitors but also foster economic growth and

community well-being.

Tourism Industry Profile of the site/destination

This chapter shows the Tourism Industry Profile of Maragondon, Cavite. It

includes what the location has to offer to the tourist and existing attractions,

activities, products, and accommodation.

A. Existing tourism attractions, products, and activities

Mt. Marami

It is a mountain in Barangay Tulay Kanluran, Maragondon, Cavite. It's a popular

hiking and mountaineering destination because of its accessible paths and stunning

rock formations. The climb is expected to be enjoyable for the first hour since the

route is smooth and provides a different view than previous hikes. Climbers are

rewarded with stunning views from the peak.

Our Lady of the Assumption Parish Church

The Our Lady of the Assumption Parish Church, also known as Maragondon

Church, is a Roman Catholic church and the only heritage site in the municipality of

Maragondon, Cavite, Philippines, recognized by the National Museum as a National

Cultural Treasure. The church was built in 1618, although it has been demolished,

rebuilt, and renovated several times. The current church was constructed in 1714.

The church is well-known for its baroque architecture, with river stones coated in

layers of stucco serving as the principal building materials, as well as the bell tower.

Bonifacio Trial House

The Bonifacio Trial House in Maragondon, Cavite, is a historical site where

Andres Bonifacio, an important figure in the Philippine Revolution, was tried for

betrayal in 1897. Originally a home constructed in 1889, it is now a museum with

displays depicting the events leading up to the trial. This house-turned-museum

provides insight into an important era in Philippine history and the controversial

destiny of its national hero.

"Alegria del Rio" Maragondon River Cruise

The Maragondon River has the gap of being the cleanest river near Manila,

making it ideal for a stunning cruise. Alegria del Rio's private trips endure around 2-3

hours, enabling you to thoroughly immerse yourself in the calm of the surroundings.

The balsa itself is built with modern facilities for your comfort, such as a lounge area

with beanbags, throw pillows, and even a water hammock at the care for sinking

your toes in the refreshing water. During the trip, you may also try your hand at

fishing, which will add some excitement to your otherwise calm adventure.

Bonifacio Shrine and Eco-Tourism Park

The Bonifacio Shrine and Eco-tourism Park in Maragondon, Cavite. Is a

historical site that honors the memory of the Filipino revolutionary leader, Andres

Bonifacio. This was the place where the supremo and his brother Procopios' final

destination, after being executed for treason by the Aguinaldo Administration.

Located between the feet of Mt. Nagpatong and Mt. Buntis, as the locals themselves

are uncertain the exact location of the brother’s execution.

Kaybiang Tunnel

The Kaybiang Tunnel in Maragondon, Cavite. Was said to be the longest road tunnel

in the Philippines as of this time. It was used in the year 2013 and it is a 300 meter

long tunnel connecting the places of Ternate, Cavite and Nasugbu, Batangas. It is a

usual stopover for bikers and other tourists who want to take a picture and enjoy the

beauty of nature. A scenic view of the ocean and its vantage points are also spots

where tourist stop for picture taking and buko (coconut) break,

Existing products

Bamboo

Maragondon, Cavite is known for its traditional bamboo craftsmanship. They make

strong furniture like tables, chairs, and bed frames from tough "kawayan tinik"

bamboo. Everyday items like baskets, trays, plates, cups, and utensils are skillfully

woven and bring out bamboo's natural warmth. They often use simple geometric

patterns or natural dyes to enhance the beauty of the material. Maragondon's

bamboo crafts reflect their heritage and provide sustainable, durable products for

everyday use.

Likhang Maragondon/ Habing Maragondon

The art of weaving has a long history in Maragondon, Cavite, passed down through

generations. Looms click and clack as skilled artisans create "Habing Maragondon,"

a beautiful and intricate hand-woven fabric. These textiles are not just functional, but

often incorporate vibrant colors and designs reflecting the town's cultural identity.

Sadly, this tradition faces challenges in the modern world. However, initiatives like

Likhang Maragondon are working to ensure this art form continues to thrive.

Delicacies in Maragondon

1. Adobo sa Asin – This traditional Filipino dish made with pork or chicken

marinated in salt, vinegar, and garlic, then simmered until tender.

2. Tamales - A savory Filipino delicacy made of ground rice, coconut milk, and

various fillings like chicken, pork, or shrimp, wrapped in banana leaves and steamed.

3. Bulalo – The Famous dishes hearty beef soup with tender meat and marrow

bones cooked in a flavorful broth with vegetables like corn, cabbage, and potatoes.

4. Espasol - A sweet rice cake made from glutinous rice flour, coconut milk, and

sugar, often rolled in toasted rice flour.

5. Suman - A sticky rice cake wrapped in banana leaves and steamed, usually

served with coconut caramel sauce or mangoes.

6. Pinais - A dish of fish or meat seasoned with spices, wrapped in banana

leaves, and steamed to infuse flavors.

7. Longganisa – And also it is a type of Filipino sausage often made with

ground pork, garlic, and various spices, typically sweet or garlicky in flavor.

Activities

Hiking

The hike in Mt. Marami in Cavite for stunning views. It is a difficult climb (4-5

hours up) with complicated routes, therefore bring a guide or experienced hikers.

There are two types of trails: short (8 km) and long (12 km). Expect farms, forests,

and river crossings. Pack rain gear, the weather changes quickly. This tough hike

rewards you with breathtaking views from the rocky peak.

History exploration

There are spots in Maragondon that provide an insight into the past. Visit a

lovely historic church with carvings to learn about people's lives in the past. Then,

visit a museum that exhibits a Philippine hero's trial using life-size figures, like

walking statues. The journey allows you to discover interesting information about

Philippine history.

Relax and take in the scenery

The Alegria del Rio cruise lets you chill on the Maragondon River. Float on

comfy beanbags, sip a drink, and watch the scenery drift by. Breathe fresh air and

forget your troubles. See the pretty plants and birds, or just close your eyes and

listen to the river.

Maragondon offers a range of accommodations catering to diverse tourist

preferences and budgets. Visitors can find several budget inns, bed-and-breakfasts,

and modest hotels, which provide basic amenities and comfortable lodgings. For

those seeking a more immersive experience, several homestays offer a glimpse into

local life. Among notable accommodations are the Villa Lorenzo and Maragondon

Plaza Hotel, which combine modern amenities with local hospitality (Department of

Tourism, n.d.).

● Riverfront Garden Resort - Riverfront Garden Resort was originally private

farm land planted with thousands of mahogany trees bought by a German

businessman and his Filipina Wife in 1996. This resort offers facilities to

ensure peaceful and relaxing stay and different types of rooms including

glamping options. Each room is beautifully done and crafted from Mahogany

trees to provide comfort and a scenic view of the river.

drive from Manila, you can experience this one-of-a-kind nature adventure

resort with aircon accommodations, fun and exciting activities, colorful flower

gardens, instagrammable viewing decks, infinity pools with a scenic view of

the sunset, and plenty of relaxation spots to rest and enjoy the majestic view

of Mt.Marami. A destination for a quick breather, especially for the Southies.

guided tours to various historical and natural attractions. These include visits to the

Maragondon Church, a National Cultural Treasure, and the Bonifacio Trial House,

where Philippine revolutionary Andres Bonifacio was tried. Adventure tours to natural

ecotourism opportunities. Travel agencies in nearby towns also facilitate tour

affordable and authentic meals. Additionally, several bakeries and snack shops offer

local delicacies and pastries (Cavite Provincial Tourism, 2022).

Shopping in Maragondon is mainly supported by small local stores and local

markets. There are numerous local shops in Maragondon where you can buy local

crafts, souvenirs, and unique handmade items that are made from bamboo. One of

the shop that offer this kind of local product is “Likhang Maragondon”. By selling

locally made products that reflect the rich cultural heritage of Maragondon. Likhang

Maragondon is an enterprise dedicated to promoting local and sustainable goods by

harnessing the traditional craftsmanship of weaving and bamboo product making. It

aims to empower Maragondon-based artisans by providing them with livelihood

opportunities. The enterprise produces hand-knotted textiles and innovative bamboo

decor, preserving a rich tradition of art-making. The intricate garments and bamboo

crafts embody the stories and skills of local weavers and artisans. Beyond the

products, Likhang Maragondon takes pride in fostering a community of dreamers

and doers, instilling purpose and pride in the artisans. Though still budding, the

enterprise seeks to showcase Maragondon's arts, crafts, and native delicacies,

hoping to inspire support for local crafts and celebrate the town's heritage.

G. Natural and socio-economic environment

Population

● Maragondon is a city in Cavite inside the CALABARZON Region. The age

group with the highest population in Maragondon, according to the 2020

Census, is 15 to 64, with 26,803 people. The age group with the lowest

population is 65 and over, with 2,433 people. When all age groups are

combined, those aged 15 up to 64 make up 66% of the young to mature

adulthood dependent population, which includes teenagers, young adults,

adults, midlife, and mature adulthood (26,803). Finally, the old dependent

population, which includes senior citizens aged 65 and up, accounts for 6% of

the total (2,433). Maragondon's population increased by 17, 873 people over

the course of 40 years, from 22,814 in 1990 to 40,687 in 2020. The most

recent census figures for 2020 show a 1.6% increase, or an increase of 2,976

people, over the previous population of 37,720 in 2015.

Conclusion

This research study is a comprehensive study that will show the strategic

development of the tourism industry in Maragondon, Cavite. It focuses first on the

current attractions in town, which range from historical sites that serve as a solid

foundation for the development of tourism, to eye-catching landscapes and

significant local products. With such data, this shows that there is a possibility for

Maragondon to gain more tourists through these resources.

Additionally, this discusses various methods to develop and improve tourism

by the means of ecological activities and the preservation of historic sites. This plan

focuses on a sustainable tourism model that will use Maragondon's culture and

natural and man-made attractions. The report contains the problems that must be

solved in Maragondon such as poor infrastructure and undermarketing. For instance,

developing the roads so that the accessibility is increased and advertising only to

increase the number of tourists; and finally, offering multiple products to the visitors

so that the customers can have a more enriched experience.

The report provides logical suggestions on steps that Maragondon can take to

make it a more popular tourist destination. This clearly identifies what can be done to
