Objectives: At the end of this Learning Activity sheet , the learners are expected to:
1. Define Clean-Up in drawing.
2. Describe Clean-Up procedures and requirements.
3. Recognize a clean-up artist.
4. Value the importance of clean-up as a drawing tips.
Lesson
Clean up requirements for drawing
Clean-up is a part of the workflow in the production of hand-
drawn animation.
In the clean-up process, I take the key drawings ('keys'), which are
often roughly drawn, and trace out a good version with one solid
line.Rough key drawings are also known as ruffs.
Clean up artist
•usually has fine draftsmanship skills.
• pay attention to every detail.
•advisable to be familiar with the principles of animation, to
understand how the character should be
moving.
Details in clean-up process
Line Quality is very important in cleaning-up. Every
production is different and will have different requirements for the
type of line drawn by the clean-up artist.
Shape and Volume
•The commonly used 3D shapes for constructing a character or
object are sphere, cube and cylinder.
• Basing your characters on shapes will help you to be consistent with volumes.
Perspective is the appearance of objects in depth as perceived by normal binocular vision
•Allows artists to trick the eye into seeing depth in a flat surface.
Look at this picture of a box drawn with two point perspective
You will notice that the closest edge (line b) looks longer
than the edges that are furthest away (lines a and c). This is
called foreshortening. It reproduces what we see everyday as
we walk down the street.
Recreating a Ruff
Flipping
•One of the hardest parts of the job for the clean-up artist is to try and keep the feel and flow of the
action being performed by the character and at the same time bring the character back on model
•I need to keep an eye out for any glaring mistakes such as buttons, or clothin features that are
missing.
•Correct Placement.
Rolling is the process of placing a finger between each of the pages
and lifting each page in succession backwards and forwards to get a feel for what is happening to the
character
Sawtoothing -that is hair or fur where the shapes 'twin' each other in a repetitive sawtooth
pattern.
Example of a Cleaned-Up Illustration
Activity 1. Puzzled Me
Directions: Answer the crossword puzzle by identifying the best words describes in each given number that
serve as a guide
Horizontal
1. Part of the workflow in the production.
6. Key drawing also known as ruffs.
10. Consistency in basing characters on shapes
Vertical
2. One of the hardest job of clean-up artist.
3.A person who will do the clean-up.
4.Pattern that is repetitive.
5.Seeing depth in a flat surface.
7.Process of placing the finger between each pages.
8. An important attributes of a line.
9. Used for constructing a character or object.
