A phrase is a group of words which does not contain subject and verb.

CLAUSE
● A clause is a group of words which that includes
at least a subject and a verb.
● It is the part of sentence.
Eg : 1)As soon as the bell rang, students ran home.
Clause 1 : As soon as the bell rang. ( the bell -- subject rang --- verb )
Clause 2 : Students ran home. ( students --- subject, ran --- verb)

Note : All sentences are clauses but all clauses are not sentences.

A sentence is a group of words which makes complete sense.
Eg : They go to college every day.
Children play games.
Every sentence has two parts .
1 ) subject 2) predicate
SUBJECT : The part which names the person or thing we express is called the SUBJECT of
the sentence.
Eg : They, children.
PREDICATE : The part which tells something about the subject is called as PREDICATE of
the sentence.
Eg : go to college every day.

TYPES OF SENTENCE
Based on sentence meaning sentences are
divided into 4 types.
1. Assertive / Declarative sentence
2. Interrogative sentence
3. Imperative sentence
4. Exclamatory sentence
ASSERTIVE SENTENCE
A sentence that states an opinion or fact or declaration is called assertive sentence.
● It starts with capital letter as well as SUBJECT and ends with FULL STOP( .)
● After subject we use verb.
● ASSERTIVE SENTENCES ARE DIVIDED INTO 2 TYPES.
a) Affirmative / positive sentence : It gives positive meaning.
Eg :She plays chess.
b) Negative sentence : It gives negative meaning.
Eg : I DO NOT GO TO COLLEGE.
NO ONE HAS COME HERE.
INTERROGATIVE SENTENCE
An interrogative sentence is used for asking a question .
An interrogative sentence always ends with question mark (?).
QUESTIONS ARE TWO TYPES.
a) Yes / NO QUESTION : It starts with Helping /Auxiliary verbs
(am,is,can ,would )
Eg : Do you play chess ? Don't you play chess ?
Are you going to college ?
b) WH -word question : Starts with wh - words ( where, when,what,why….)
Eg :When do you play chess ?
Why didn't you come here ?
IMPERATIVE SENTENCE
A imperative sentence that gives a command/order/request...is called an
imperative sentence.
● It does not contain SUBJECT
● It starts with verb1 / do not/please/Let
● Ends with Fullstop (.)
● Note : There is no SUBJECT in these sentences but we have to think
there is a SUBJECT i.e “ YOU “.
● Eg : Open the door Clean the table
Let us play chess. Don't play under hot sun.
