Those words are connected and part of our lesson for


today which is all about the measures of position of
ungrouped data for Quartile.

a. Determine the quartile 1, 2 and 3 of an ungrouped
data
b. Illustrates and solve problems of ungrouped data in
quartiles; and,
c. Appreciate the concept of measures of
position(quartile) in real life situation.
Observe and listen carefully for we will be having another
activity later.

C. Presenting examples/instances of the new lesson

So today, our lesson is all about measures of position.


What is measures of position? Can you read the passage
please? It is a number that tells where the scores stand relative to the
others in a set of data. It is a measure whether a value is
about the average, or whether its unusually high or low.
Thank you!
We have 3 measures of position, the quartiles, deciles and
percentile.
Today, we will be focusing about the quartile of ungrouped
data, but before that, let us first define these terms.
What is measure? Any idea class? (Student’s answer may vary)

Very good! Measure is a standard unit used to express the


size, amount, or degree of something.
How about position?
A position class is all about arranging a particular position
that someone or somethings belong.
Median is the value that separates the higher and lower
half of the given data.
Now the quartile. Any idea class what is quartile? None sir!

A quartile from the word “quart”, division by 4. Like in our


examination. It is divided into 4 quarters. Quarter 1, 2, 3,
and 4, what else? Can you give an example?
Months in a year sir! It is divided into 4 quarter: quarter 1
which is January, February and March, quarter 2; April, May
and June, quarter 3; July, August and September and quarter
4; October, November and December sir!

D. Discussing new concepts and practicing new skills

Now let us discuss about quartile.


Please read the definition of quartile…everybody.
Quartile- the score points which divides a distribution into four
equal parts.

Let’s take a look at this illustration.

Lower Quartile Middle Quartile Upper Quartile


Class, in our illustration it shows that we have 3 quartiles.
The lower quartile Q1, middle quartile or median Q2 and the
upper quartile Q3.

We have the interquartile range between the 3 quartiles.

25% of the data has value ≤ Q1.


50 % of the data has a value ≤ Q2.
75 % of the data has a value ≤ Q3.
Now, let’s find the position and value of quartiles in a set of
data. To find the nth quartile of the given data, we have to
use the Mendenhall and Sincich Method. It is a method in
finding the quartile position of a given set of data by
rounding down or rounding up.

Where: k = the number of quartiles we want to find
n= total number of elements in the data.

Q1 or lower quartile = (n+1)th term if the lower quartile falls

halfway between two decimal integers, round up.

Q2 or middle quartile = (n+1)th term

Q3 or upper quartile = (n+1)th term if upper quartile falls

halfway between two decimal integers, round down.

Let’s have an example.


The owner of a coffee shop recorded the number of
customers who came into his café each hour in a day. The
results were 14, 10, 12, 9, 17, 5, 8, 9, 14, 10 and 11. Find
the lower quartile, median and upper quartile of the data.

First, arrange the set of data in ascending order. What is The ascending order of the data are 5, 8, 9, 9, 10, 10, 11, 12,
the ascending order or the given set? 14, 14, 17

Thank you! The least value in data is 5 and the greatest


value is 17.
Now let us solve for lower quartile or Q1,

Using the formula Q1 = (n+1)th term

Now, let us first identify the value of k and n.
Now, what is the value of k and n in our problem?

Find Q1 and Q3. Locate its position and round off to the
nearest integer.
Since we are looking for quartile 1, we use the formula for

Next let’s compute.

Aqua running has been promoted as a method for


cardiovascular conditioning for the injured athlete as well
as for others to desire a low impact aerobic workout. A
study reported in the Journal of Sports Medicine
investigated the relationship between exercise cadence
and heart rate by measuring the heart rates of 20 healthy
volunteers at a cadence of 48 cycles per minute (a cycle
