ICMATH Exam - 11 January 2022

Instructions: You have 1h40 minutes to complete the exam (50 minutes for each part). For
each exercise the number of available points is specified.
FIRST PART: Answer to Exercises 1, 2.
SECOND PART: Answer to Exercises 3, 4, 5.

EXERCISE 1 (8/32)

(a) (2 points) Find the cartesian equation of the plane passing through Q = (1, 0, 2) and
parallel to the plane −3x + 2y + z − 3 = 0.
(b) (3 points) Determine the parametric equation of the straight line perpendicular to
the plane π: −3x + 2y + z − 3 = 0 and passing through Q = (1, 0, 2). Compute the
distance between the point Q and the plane π.
(c) (3 points) Let P1 = (0, 0, 0), P2 = (1, 0, 2) and P3 = (0, 3, 0). Compute the area of
the triangle with vertices P1 , P2 , P3 .

EXERCISE 2 (8/32).

(a) (3 points)
• Draw →−r 1 (t) =< 2, 3 cos t, 2 sin t >, 0 ≤ t < 2π.
• Determine A11 , A22 , A33 such that
    
A11 0 0 2 2
 0 A22 0   3 cos t  =  cos t  .
0 0 A33 2 sin t sin t

What kind of transformation is described by the matrix-vector product?

(b) (6 points) Let    
3 1 2 6
A= 6 1 2  b =  9 .
9 2 1 12
By employing the Rouché - Capelli theorem discuss the solvability of the linear system
Ax = b and specify if the solution exists unique. In case of existence, determine the
solution(s) employing the Gaussian Elimination method.
EXERCISE 3 (6/32).

(a) (2 points) Find the parametric equation of the plane π passing through the points
P = (1, 1, 1), Q = (2, 2, 2) and S = (0, 1, 1). Determine a point belonging to the plane
π and whose distance from P is equal to 2.
(b) (4 points) Consider the following parametric surfaces

r 1 (s, t) =< s, s cos(t), s sin(t) > 0 ≤ s ≤ 1, 0 ≤ t < 2π

r 2 (s, t) =< s + 1, s cos(t), s sin(t) > 0 ≤ s ≤ 1, 0 ≤ t < 2π

• Draw →
−r 1 (s, t) and →−r 2 (s, t).
• Draw the intersection between → −
r 1 (s, t) and the plane z = 0, and the intersection
between →

(a) (1 point) limx→0 x .
(b) (1 point) f 0 (x) where f (x) = xesin(x)
R π/2
(c) (2 points) 0 cos(x)esin x dx (Hint: Use integration by substitution).

EXERCISE 5 (6/32)

(a) (3 points) Let f (x, y) = y 2 sin x. Compute the cartesian equation of the tangent
plane to f (x, y) at the point (π/2, 3).
(b) (2 points) Let f (x, y) = exy . Draw the graph of the curve f (2, y) for 0 ≤ y ≤ 2,
specifying the plane to which the curve belongs.
(c) (1 point) Let f (x, y) = sin(x), 0 ≤ x ≤ 2π, 0 ≤ y ≤ 2. Draw the level curve
f (x, y) = 1.
