ICMATH Exam - 23 January 2024

Instructions: You have 1h40 minutes to complete the exam (50 minutes for each part). For
each exercise the number of available points is specified.
FIRST PART: Answer to Exercises 1, 2.
SECOND PART: Answer to Exercises 3, 4, 5.
**** Report all the relevant steps employed to obtain the results ****

EXERCISE 1 (8/32)

(a) (3 points) Find the cartesian equation of the plane π1 passing through P = (1, 1, 1)
and parallel to the plane π2 : x + 2y + z = 3. Find the distance between the two
planes π1 and π2 .
(b) (3 points) Determine the parametric equation of the intersecting line between the
planes π1 : x + 2y + z = 0 and π2 : y + z = 1.
(c) (2 points) Given the points A = (1, 1, 1), B = (1, 0, 0), C = (0, 1, 0) find the area of
the triangle with vertices A, B, C.

EXERCISE 2 (8/32).

(a) (3 points)
• Draw →−r (t) =< 2 cos t, 3 sin t, 1 >, 0 ≤ t ≤ 2π. Find a matrix A such that A· →

r (t)

is equal to q (t) =< cos t, sin t, 1 >.
• Compute the inverse of the matrix

By employing the Rouché - Capelli theorem discuss the solvability of the linear system
Ax = b and specify if the solution exists unique. In case of existence, determine the
solution(s) employing the Gaussian Elimination method.
EXERCISE 3 (6/32).

(a) (2 points) Find the parametric equation of the plane π passing through the points
P = (1, 1, 1), Q = (2, 2, 2) and R√= (0, 1, 0). Find a point belonging to the plane
whose distence from P is equal to 3.
(b) (1 point) Let →−

(c) (1 point) Given a parametric curve → −
r (t) and the associated tangent vector →

τ (t) and

normal vector →

n (t), define the binormal vector b (t). How to use the binormal vector
to determine wheteher a curve is planar or not?
(d) (2 points) Consider the following parametric surface

r 1 (s, t) =< t, t cos(s), 4t sin(s) > 0 ≤ s < 2π, 0 ≤ t ≤ 2.

plane to f (x, y) at the point (2, π/2).
(b) (2 points) Let f (x, y) = x2 cos(y). Draw the graphs of the curves f (2, y) and f (x, 0).
(c) (1 point) Draw a surface whose level curve of level 1 reduces to a single point.
