A composite volcano_____
 is built from layers of lava and volcanic ash
A cinder cone volcano_____
 consists primarily of cinders and volcanic rock.
A shield volcano _____
 composed almost entirely of thin lava.
A volcanic eruption can be either_____
 explosive or gentle
How is a composite volcano similar to the other types of volcanoes?
 It has layers of ash like a cinder cone volcano and has layers of lava like a shield
volcano.
The heat from the Earth’s interior as a source of energy is called________

The following are hot areas where geothermal power plants are built EXCEPT:
 plains
Geothermal power plants and geothermal heat pump differ in the ______ of heat source to
produce energy.
 Depth
What is the main disadvantage to building geothermal energy plants?
 Cost
Why is it that not all countries can benefit from geothermal energy?
 Not all countries have volcanic activity.

How do Volcanoes Erupt?

Volcanoes are vents, or holes, in the crust of the Earth that spew out hot liquid rock known as
lava along with fumes, ash, and steam. The cone-shaped peak that we identify as a volcano is
formed when the lava cools and solidifies. Near the margins of tectonic plates, both on land
and in the sea, are found the majority of the world's volcanoes. Volcanoes on land arise from
the movement of one tectonic plate beneath another. A thicker continental plate is typically
subducted, or moved beneath, a thin, heavy oceanic plate. The ocean plate descends into the
mantle at this point. This plate's rocks press out water that has become trapped in them. As a
result, some of the rocks dissolve. Since magma is lighter than the surrounding rock, it rises
from the melted rock. This magma accumulates miles below the surface in places called
magma chambers. When sufficient magma builds up in the chamber, it pushes its way to the
surface and bursts, frequently resulting in volcanic eruptions.
