GOAL
The goal of this course is to help you build a firm foundation in understanding the Japanese language
beyond the level 2 proficiency. Through learning the Japanese language, this course also introduces
both modern and traditional Japanese culture.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
The objectives for this course are;
• To acquire listening, reading, speaking, and writing skills at elementary level in colloquial and
contemporary Japanese in topics and situations.
• To acquire grammar, vocabulary, and expressions as well as communication skills that are
necessary and relevant to function in the Japanese society.
• To understand basic structures of Japanese adjectives and verbs.

REQUIRED TEXTBOOKS
• Minna no Nihongo Elementary 1-2 2nd Edition
• Minna no Nihongo Elementary 1-2: Translation & Grammatical Notes 2nd Edition
• Supplementary Course Materials (Available at the photocopy service: HSS-B1-S1)

CLASS ATTENDANCE
1. NTU offers you the freedom to learn and the opportunity to nurture your own learning. However,
we would encourage you to make class attendance willingly mandatory and to extend the usual
respect and courtesy to your tutor by providing an explanation if you are absent from class. Your
regular attendance and active participation is crucial to the success and well-being of you and your
fellow learners.
2. Please attend the tutorial group you are registered in, unless you have made official arrangements
with the tutors. If you have to attend a tutorial group other than your regular section on a particular
day, you must notify your tutor and receive permission at least one day in advance. When
requested, your tutor will arrange make-up tutorial lesson for you. Only due to an emergency and
university official events you may be allowed to participate in a different tutorial group.

HOUSE RULES
1. No text messaging will be allowed during class. Also, please turn off your cell phone, or at least
turn it to silent mode during class.
2. Do not take pictures during the lesson.

COMMUNICATION
1. Your tutor will be communicating with you via NTU e-mail account.
2. Announcements and additional handouts will be posted on the NTULearn site. Please log in and
check regularly.

CML Policy on Re-tests


1) Any student who is absent from a test, with MC or valid reasons, must be given a re- test.
2) Students who are absent for the re-test with no valid reasons (MC or compassionate leave,
or short leave of absence), will be given a “0” for the coursework component.
3) If students are absent for the re-test but submit an MC again, the course coordinator can
decide whether to conduct another re-test or to re-scale the total marks.
4) All re-test are to be conducted immediately after the expiry of the MC, or within a
maximum of five working days after the expiry of the MC. Late MC will not be accepted.
5) Students who are not able to attend the test, must inform their tutors and present
evidence of their MC or approved reasons immediately. All original MCs must be submitted
to their respective schools.
