One day, Siddhartha took several rides in a chariot across the
countryside because he was so curious, He encountered terrible
views of an old man, a sick man, and a corpse on his trips. He
was deeply disturbed by the bleak depictions of old age, illness
and death, Later, he came to a wandering ascetic looking for
freedom from the fear of pain and death after giving up. the
world. For a while, he went back to living at the palace, but he

wasn’t very happy there. Even the néws of the birth of his son
did not make him happy. He was alone in the palace one night
when he wondered around and felt his opulent existence was
pointless. He left the palace, shaved his head, put on a beggar’s
robe instead of his princely attire, and started his quest for
enlightenment. Siddhartha had discussions with esteemed
professors and studied meditation and religious theories. He still
couldn’t find any solutions to his uncertainties and queries. He
then started his own independent search for enlightenment along
with five disciplines, Through physical restraint, putting up with
discomfort, holding their breath and starving almost to hunger,
they sought freedom from suffering. Siddhartha tried the middle
path but couldn’t find a solution. He came to understand that
mental discipline was the key to release. He obtained
enlightenment while meditating under a sacred fig tree that
became known as the Bodhi tree, His spiritual conflict was
mythologized as a Great battle with Mara, a demonic figure who
symbolizes human passions and whose name means
“destruction”. 7

Mary and Tom left their hotel the first evening of their vacation
in Rome to go out to supper. A guy approached Tom from
behind as they waited on the sidewalk for the light to change so
they could cross the street. Tom’s arms were restrained to his
sides by the man, who also wrapped an arm over Mary’s neck.
Despite Tom’s efforts to free himself, a young woman hurried
up and quickly stole Mary’s purse and Tom’s wallet from his
hand. Tom tried to catch up with the duo as they fled, but they
vanished through a little side street. Tom and Mary were
unharmed, but Mary was afraid; her heart began to race, she felt
frail and trembling and she began to cry. Tom had lost all
colour; his face was not completely white. They returned along

the same route to their hotel, constantly scanning their
surroundings as they went. Back in the hotel lobby, they found
Mary still trembling. When Tom and Mary explained what had
occurred to the receptionist, he was appalled and offered them
drinks before calling the police. While they waited for the cops,
Mary began to tremble and feel queasy. When the police showed
up, they brought Mary and Tom to the police station in the heart
of Rome to submit a report. As they made their way back to
their hotel, the unsteadiness began to subside and instead,
everyone began to feel irritated that they had been singled out
for attack. Tom was unable to think or speak much. Tom relaxed.
once they were back in their room and fell asleep on the bed.
However, Mary was unable to sleep and spent most of the night
awake, replaying the events in her head. Even though Mary and
Tom were unharmed physically, they were both having a
significant emotional response to the stressful scenario.
