MACHINE SHOP LAB REPORT
AIMS
1. To understand safety measures in the machine shop
2. To understand various uses of tools and proper handling methods of these tools
3. To understand various machines in the lab, their uses and the various operations they perform.
SAFETY
Safety id the condition of being protected from the cause of any danger, risk or injury.
It is also the state in which hazards and conditions leading to physical, psychological and material harm
are being controlled in order to preserve the health and wellbeing of an individual and community.
TYPES OF SAFETY
1. General safety
a. Use the tools and machines properly
b. Follow procedure and avoid shortcuts
c. In case of any emergency inform the instructor in charge
d. Stay sober and alert
e. Use proper tool for the job
f. Keep working parameter clean
g. Do not run while in the workshop
2. Personal safety
a. Be prepared and always alert
b. Wear the right attires
c. Avoid wrist watches, bangles, earrings, and necklaces
d. No food or drink consumption in the workshops
e. Avoid touching rotating parts of machines
f. Safety is everyone’s personal responsibility
3. Tool safety
a. Use the right tool for the job
b. Clean all tools after use
c. No pocketing of sharp objects
d. Carrying tools with care
e. Being aware of surroundings
f. Following instructions while handling tools
g. Regular inspection of tools to make sure they are in good conditions
4. Machine safety
a. Do not adjust, clear, repair machines while it is running
b. Ensure all machines guarding are in place and working properly
c. Don not leave machine running unattended
d. Do not stop running parts of machine with hand or body
e. Remove chuck key and wrenches from machine after adjustments
f. Listen to machine if something does not sound right shut it down.
g. Do not engage gear when machine is running
h. Stop all the work 10 minutes prior to the time you need to leave the workshop
5. Work practice safety
a. Double-check the work piece after fastening
b. Machine to be operated by one person
c. Do not talk unnecessarily while operating machine
d. Be sure you have sufficient light to see clearly when performing any job
e. Work at the pace you are comfortable wit
f. If you do not know how to do something ask
g. Listening to music is prohibited
Tool introduction
1. Measuring tools
a. Tape measure- it is used to take dimensions of materials with longer lengths
b. Steel rule- it is used to take dimensions of materials with shorter lengths. It is also used as a
marking tool
c. Engineering tri-square - used to measure dimensions.
- Used as a marking tool.
- Used to identify 45 and 90 degrees angles
d. Vernier caliper
- Used to take finer measurements
- Used to measure both internal and external diameters
- Used to take measurements of depth.
e. Vernier height gauge –used to measure heights
-used as a marking out tool
2. Cutting tools
a. Hacksaw – uses to manually cut and separate work piece from raw materials. Cutting requires
back and forward movements to allow cutting and removal of unwanted part.
b. Tool bit- made of high speed steel used for cutting and shearing processes
c. Combination center drill - used to drill small pilot holes at the center of the work piece that is
used to guide he drill
d. Drill bit – used to drill holes in the work piece
e. Knurling tool – used to create rough surface with certain uniformity to increase friction
f. Di-stock – used for manually producing external threads
g. Tap – used for creating internal threads
MACHINES
Machine introduction
A machine is a physical system that uses power to apply forces and control movement to perform an
action.
1. Lathe machine - found in leaning institution or industries that deals with mechanical work and it
is used for several cutting operations with lathe machine workspace together with certain parts
of a machine known chuck as cutting tool remain stationary but can be adjusted the process of
cutting process involves shearing of the unwanted part of the works piece to attain desired
dimensions.
2. Pillar drilling machine - used for drilling type of cutting operations the cutting tool remains
stationary and cut be adjusted to allow cutting process to take place towards the cutting of
the work piece as the work piece remain stationary.
3. Shaper - used to shape off or clear of or shearing off unwanted part of a work piece by engaging
the cutting too to clear off surface of the work piece to give or produce flat surface and also
other shapes. It involves forward and backward movement of the cutting tool to allow shearing
off process to take place.
4. Milling machine - is used in milling type of cutting operations where by the cutting tool rotates
to provide the repaired movement's for cutting operations to take place. The tools being used
ore end mill cutter, up and down mill type of cutters also gear cutters cutting tools as work piece
remain stationary. It has three cutting Axes that helps in the adjustments during cutting
operations for surface milling or other type of milking process to take place.
Cutting operations
Turning
1. Tapper turning - the cutting process whereby the cutting tool is set to a certain Angle of degree
towards the work piece it involves both narrow and wide (concave and converge) which results
in several diameters from starting point to end point of the work piece
2. Plane turning - the process is whereby the cutting takes place parallel to the work piece from
the starting point to the end point of the work piece results into constant diameter
3. Step turning - the movements take place parallel to the work piece but stop somewhere within
the work piece before reaching other and which results into several diameters.
4. Facing – It is the process of shearing off one end or both end of work piece to find datum after
separating the work piece from the raw material.it takes place when the cutting tool is set at any
angel apart from 90° as the movements of the cutting tool work perpendicular to the work piece
5. Chamfering - the process of cutting 45° by 1 mm to the edge of the work piece after facing.
Cutting tool is set 45° to allow chamfering process to take place to produce a safe edge.
6. Drilling – It is a process or creating a non-exist hole to the work piece
MACHINE SHOP EXERCISE
DOOR HINGE
PROCEDURE
1. Cut two pieces from the raw material using a hack saw. One piece should be of length 35mm
while the second piece of length 65mm
2. On the 35mm piece, face off one side before drilling into it a through hole of 13mm
diameter. Using a vernier height caliper mark 30mm high and face off to that make on the
lathe machine to the 30mm mark.
3. For the 65mm piece, face off one side
4. Use the vernier height machine to mark 30mm and 60mm heights from the faces side
5. Used the lathe machine face off to the 60mm mark made
6. Step off to the 30mm mark up to a diameter of 13mm
7. Chamfer one side of the 30mm piece and 60mm piece.
