SHOULD WE

STOP THE
“Content Writer
vs Copywriter”
THING?
YES, WE
SHOULD.
We think.
I got a question one day
from a webinar participant.
“What’s the difference
between copywriter and
content writer?”

My response.
“Holy garbanzo beans! I’m
fucked”. —me, screaming
internally
The guy might expect some
sensational, inspiring,
life-changing answers on
how a content writer is
different from a
copywriter…
….Or a UX writer.
Or a Product writer.
Or a Technical writer.
Or a Module writer.
Or a Scriptwriter.
Or a Medical writer.
Or a Speechwriter.

But, no. Not from me. Not today. Not under my watch.
My basic answer to that:

Writers have been around

since God knows when.

One of the oldest

professions, just like
prostitution.

To answer the very question

properly, we must first define
- what is content.
Content is words, sounds,
and visuals.

That’s it.

Finito.
And, Copywriters are responsible for the
development of advertising ideas, with a particular
focus on the written words (copy) within these,
according to The Institute of Practitioners in
Advertising (IPA).
So, by definition, copywriters
indeed produce content i.e.
written words.

Can we call a Copywriter a

content writer? Of course.

Can we call a Content

Writer a Copywriter? If you
work with words, sí señor.
People LOVE to give new
(fancy) names to old stuff.

Same shit. Different names.

‘Whatever’ writer you are, always

bear this principle in mind: write in
a clear and compelling manner.

Give values to your readers

through your content.
Not yourself, your clients, or bosses.
Don’t be shunned by new
fancy names or toys.

Turn your ‘bullshit radar’ on.

Always.

“What has been will be

again, and what has been
done will be done again;
there is nothing new under
the sun”. —Ecclesiastes 1:9
