Explanation and Application of Problem-based Learning Problem-based learning challenges students in solving real world problems. The experiential learning in which the students solve problems collaboratively and reflected through experiences. The learning is student-centered but there is an inclusion of the teacher in the role of the facilitator. The students must be engaged and work in cooperative groups for a period of time and must be encouraged to look multiple sources of information. In Problem-based Learning, the students must be tactful and have skills to solve the problems. The students examined the problems discuss, analyze, research and produce solutions to the problem. The most important is that problem-based learning must focus in solving problems closely related to their lives in real-world situations. APPLICATION OF PROBLEM-BASED LEARNING Subject: History Topic: Indicators of Good Governance Classroom Situation: In History, the teacher may group the students consisting of three students per group. The teacher asked each group to give an insights and reactions to the question What are the indicators of good governance? The teacher may ask the students to give some specific situations based of what they have observed. The group worked together regarding the question. Each of them give their opinions and insights based on what they experienced. After a few minutes, the teacher asked each group to present or share their thoughts in class. After they have presented or share their thoughts in class, the teacher will introduce smaller less complex problems related to their ideas. In problem-based learning the learners should discuss the problem within the group, define and share what they know and organized their thoughts and ideas as a group. Group dynamics is strictly observe and an essential component of problem-based learning. Problem-based learning challenges the students as they work with complex real-world problems. One application of this is a question why we need to change the curriculum? It is imperative to know that the students need to follow the new curriculum to improve the quality of education by adding subjects that will help them to be more prepared enough to face the reality of being a teacher inside the real classroom. Subject: Art Education Topic: Color Problem: How to obtain secondary color and tertiary color using the primary colors from the primary colors red, blue and yellow.
At the end of the lesson, the students are expected to obtain the secondary colors and the tertiary colors from the primary colors red, blue, and yellow. The teacher will group the class. The primary colors red, blue, and yellow will be provided by the teacher. Then he will ask each group to obtain the different secondary and tertiary colors by mixing two or more primary colors. Theories about color are not provided. The students need to discover by themselves on how they will obtain what the teacher is being ask. After obtaining the secondary and tertiary colors, the students need to conceptualize their own theory on how to obtain those colors. These theories will be presented to the class and will be carefully analyzed through the guidance of the teacher. In Problem-based Learning, the teacher is only a facilitator in class. She will be using an approach that student-centered will show. This is a problem-based learning; the teacher will let the students discover new things in their own way. The teacher will divide the students into group, assign a topic for them to research and let them discuss it next meeting together with their output and participation of all the group members. Subject: Physical Education Topic: Physical Fitness Classroom Situation: The teacher will discuss and present to his students the different areas of ohysical fitness and the different activities suited for them. The teacher will let his students to perform individual or by groups and test their ability, strength, power and flexibility. After the activity, the students will know their area of difficulty and strength. Subject: Research Topic: Research Problem Classroom Situation: The groups of students were required to make a research problem pertaining to the different problems encountered by the students particularly in their studies. Each group were about to present their research problem. Afterwards, each group will conduct a research. It should be written in bond paper. Students will work in cooperative learning. Groups will examine the problem, research, discuss, analyze, and produce tentative recommendations, explanations and solutions. Problem-based Learning serves and brings the students with area world challenge similar to what they encounter. Through skills the content of teaching is one of the most important features. The process commonly used systematic approach in resolving different problems and challenges that are encountered in life and career. Subject: Political Science Topic: Current Issues
Situation: An Experience One of the education students who is taking up the subject, Political Science is wondering why he has to take the subject, why he has to study and be cognizant on current issues. He is always watching TV every night and reading newspapers, he still asks the importance of the subject and he even think that it is not related to his course. One day, his teacher announced that they will have their final examination next week. He reviewed his subject very well and even memorized important terms. The day of their examination came. He was surprised that their exam is all situational. Different situations and problems are given wherein they have to apply what they have read, watched, studied and learned. After the examination, he finally found the answers to his questions. He finally realized the importance of the subject in his life and in every persons life. The students became motivated and have a feeling of accomplishment when they assumed responsibility for their learning. Problem-based learning will help the students in activities that are similar to those they will use in some situations. The responsibility of the teacher is to provide resources in learning and guide the students in their efforts in problem-based learning and guide the students in their efforts in problem-solving.
Subject: Field Study Topic: Problem-based Learning in Teaching Classroom Situation: In our new curriculum for education courses, The Field Study subject was introduced to enhance the Observation and Participation (OP) subject and Student Teaching (ST). Field Study is taken early as second year in the course unlike OP and ST which are offered in fourth year. Through this, they are exposed earlier and prepared to experience the realities of teaching before they become student teachers. Prospective teachers were exposed and experienced problem-based learning in the field of teaching. Subject: Rizal Topic: Celebration of Independence Day is approaching about Dr. Jose Rizal Classroom Situation: The celebration of Independence Day is approaching and from now all the year level is having a presentation. Your section was assigned to make an exhibit about Dr. Jose Rizals life. Now your adviser will be your mentor in making this exhibit. Your teacher groups you into two, one group is look for information and materials to be used in exhibition and the second group is the one who will set up the place and details. Everyone is having a full time cooperation and trust to one another. Now they are experiencing and learned how to make an exhibit, how hard it is to prepare, and also
they learned to cooperate to one another. The problem-based learning was done by doing in a group through cooperation.
