Chapter I
Background of the Study
Understanding the concept of "right of way" is essential for promoting
safe interactions between pedestrians and motorists on the roads. It defines
who has the priority to proceed first at intersections, merging lanes, or
pedestrian crossings as outlined by the law. More importantly, it emphasizes
the act of giving way to the other party as a gesture of courtesy and a
practice of road safety. The study on pedestrian and motorist awareness of
the right of way in the central business district of Bontoc, Mountain Province,
is significant at various levels - international, national, regional, and local.
Internationally, road safety is a global concern, with pedestrian and
motorist interactions playing a crucial role in preventing accidents and
ensuring safe mobility. The Philippines, at the national level, has been
actively promoting road safety initiatives to reduce traffic-related incidents,
underscoring the need to assess awareness levels in specific regions like
Bontoc. Regionally, the Cordillera Administrative Region, where Mountain
Province is situated, faces unique road challenges due to its mountainous
terrain, emphasizing the importance of heightened awareness among road
users. Locally, in Bontoc, where the central business district is a hub of
economic activity, prioritizing pedestrian and motorist safety is essential.
The concept of "STOP, LOOK, and LISTEN" embodies the fundamental
principles of road safety, emphasizing the need to pause, observe
surroundings, and be attentive to potential hazards before proceeding.
In Delhi, pedestrians bear the brunt of road mishaps, with a significant
number of traffic fatalities involving pedestrians. The study highlights the
prevalence of accidents on the Ring Road, underscoring the need for
enhanced pedestrian safety measures. Understanding pedestrian accidents,
especially at street crossings and pedestrian facilities like zebra crossings, is
crucial for improving road safety. Research on pedestrian behaviors and the
impact of obstacles in pedestrian lanes can provide valuable insights for
designing safer walking environments and enhancing road safety measures.
Additionally, data from the Metro Manila Accident Reporting and Analysis
System sheds light on factors influencing fatal road outcomes, emphasizing
the importance of addressing road safety issues across different road types
and transit stations.
Chapter 2
Research Design and Methodology
This chapter presents the methods and procedures essential in the
conduct of the study. It consists of the research design, locale and
population, data gathering procedures, data gathering tools, and the
treatment of the data to be collected. This study will employ the use of
descriptive research design to determine the level of awareness of
pedestrian and motorist and the factors affecting their awareness on the
pedestrian right of way. Descriptive research is a research method that
describes the characteristics of the population of the study. It is a
quantitative research that is considered conclusive and is use to least
specific hypothesis and describes the characteristics or functions, (Bar Fluet,
April 2021).
Locale and Population of the Study
This study will be conducted with the diverse stakeholders of Bontoc,
including pedestrians, local residents, especially the three barangays of
Bontoc which are Bontoc Ili, Callutit, and Poblacion, law enforcement officers,
and representatives from the engineering unit of LGU-Bontoc. These
stakeholders will offer unique perspectives on pedestrian safety and right of
way, contributing to a comprehensive understanding of the issues and
challenges faced in the community. Through their participation, the study
will aim to shed light on the experiences, perceptions, and behaviors related
to pedestrian safety in Poblacion, informing evidence-based interventions to
enhance pedestrian mobility and well-being. Respondents will be selected
using a stratified sampling method to ensure a representative sample from
each barangay. First, the total population will be divided into strata based on
the different barangays. Next, within each stratum, a simple random
sampling technique will be employed to select 100 respondents
proportionally from each barangay. This approach will allow for equal
allocation and representation across the selected barangays, ensuring a
diverse and unbiased sample of participants for the survey.
Data Gathering Procedure
A letter of request to conduct the study will be prepared. The
researcher will construct a questionnaire checklist, which will be validated by
the professor of the subject, a letter of request to be sign by the Department
Chairperson to be sent to each respective Barangay Captains, Chief of Police
of Bontoc, and head of the engineering unit of the LGU to be permitted to
conduct
