Fiber Optic Communication B E (E & TC)

EXPERIMENT NO. 2

TITLE: To plot electrical characteristic of optical source LED and Laser.

AIM: To Study the V-I AND P-I characteristic of an LED and LASER diode.

APPARATUS:

1. V-I characteristic trainer kit

2. Optical Power meter
3. Optical fiber cable

THEORY:

Explain basic principle of operation of optical sources, requirement of hetero-junction structure

and then operation of LED and process of emission.

PROCEDURE:

I) LED-

1) Switch on the power supply.

2) Connect the optical transmitter to voltmeter.

3) Connect anode of transmitter to voltmeter and cathode to current meter.

4) Vary voltage and current using pot.

5) Plot characteristic for voltage Vs current.

6) For P-I characteristic, connect the transmitter in circuit couple transmitter to detector on

optical power meter.

7) Vary voltage to vary current and note corresponding power meter.[Reset power meter ,before

taking any reading ,every time]

8) Plot P-I characteristic.

9) Connect ground of CRO to G point and CH-1 to Y and CH-II to X point. Press XY mode and
observe VI curve on CRO.

II) LASER:

1) Connect the plastic multimode fiber optic cable to Transmitter unit and other end to the power
meter.

2) Connect DMM across VL and Ground.

3) Keep Set IF knob at minimum position and switch on Transmitter and power meter.

4) Slowly turn ‘Set up’ knob clockwise to increase VL and PO.

5) Note reading at regular intervals and calculate IF =

6) Plot IF VS PO.

OBSERVATIONS:

I)LED :-

V (Volts) I (mA) P (mW)

CONCLUSION:

QUESTIONS:
1) What are the requirements of light sources?

2) Explain working of LED?

3) Explain working of ILD?

4) Compare LED and LASER diode?
