PREPOSITIONS
A preposition is a word which is used before a noun or a pronoun to show its
relation to something else. They are said to govern the nouns or noun phrases
that are put after them. The nouns or noun phrases are said to be the objects
of the prepositions. A preposition not only joins one noun to another, it may
also join a verb to a noun or an adverb to another adverb, or an adjective to
another adjective.
KINDS OF PREPOSITIONS :
1. Simple prepositions – at, by, from, in, of, off, on, out, through, till, to, up,
with.
2. Compound prepositions – these are generally formed by prefixing a
preposition to a noun, an adjective or an adverb.
About, above, across, along, beyond, underneath, outside, before,
within, without, below, behind, inside etc.
3. Phrase Prepositions – these are groups of words with the force of a
single preposition.
According to, along with, away from, because of, by means of, by reason
of, by virtue of, for the sake of, in accordance with, in addition to, in spite
of, in front of, in order to, with regard to, on account of.
