Functioning of Keyboard
Keyboard is one of the popular input
device which allows us to enter our data
and instructions in the computer using
text mode.

The various of keys available on the


QWERTY keyboard are:
Alphabet keys (A-Z)
Number keys (0-9)
Punctuation keys (.,;,:,etc.)
Special keys (Backspace, Shift, Ctrl,
Alt, etc.)

Alphabet keys
The alphabet keys are used to type
letters, words and sentences. There are
twenty-six Alphabet keys on the
keyboard.

Number keys
The number keys are used to type numbers. They
are present at two places on the keyboard – above
the Alphabet keys and on the right hand side of the
keyboard.
The set of number keys on the right hand side is
called the Numeric Keypad.
The numbers of the Numeric keypad work only
when Num lock key is ON. When the Num Lock is
ON, a light glows on the top right corner of the
keyboard. To switch it on ON, press the Num Lock
key once.
Special Keys
There are many special keys and each one of them
has its own function.
 Backspace key
 Spacebar Key
 Enter Key
 Caps Lock Key
 Arrow Keys
 Delete Key
 Symbol Keys
 Ctrl Key and Alt Key
 Shift Key
 Home Key
 End Key
 Page Up
 Page Down
Various Keys of Keyboard
The various of keys available on the
QWERTY keyboard are:

Alphabet keys
The alphabet keys are used to type
letters, words and sentences. There are
twenty-six Alphabet keys on the
keyboard.

Number keys
The number keys are used to type numbers. They
are present at two places on the keyboard – above
the Alphabet keys and on the right hand side of the
keyboard.
The set of number keys on the right hand side is
called the Numeric Keypad.
The numbers of the Numeric keypad work only
when Num lock key is ON. When the Num Lock is
ON, a light glows on the top right corner of the
keyboard. To switch it on ON, press the Num Lock
key once.

Special Keys
There are many special keys and each one of them
has its own function.
 Backspace key
This key is used to delete characters on the left
side of the cursor. The cursor is the blinking
line on the screen.

 Spacebar Key
This key is used to give space between the
words. It is the longest key on the keyboard.
Press it once to give a space of single letter.
The cursor moves forward leaving a blank
space.

 Enter Key
This key is used to start a new line while
typing. The cursor moves on the new line when
we press this key. The Enter key is present at
two places-near the Alphabet keys and in the
Numeric keypad.

 Caps Lock Key
This key is used to type capital letters. Press
the Caps lock key once to switch it ON. A light
glows above the numeric keypad. Now, all the
letters will appear in Capital.
To switch if OFF the Caps Lock Key, press it
once again. The light goes OFF and now we can
type small letters again.

 Arrow Keys
These keys are used to move the cursor. There
are four Arrow keys- Left, Right, Up and Down.
Arrow keys are also called Navigation keys.

 Delete Key
This key is used to delete a character on the
right side of the cursor.

 Symbol Keys
Symbol keys have different symbols printed on
them. We press these keys to type symbols like
=,<,>,etc.

 Ctrl Key and Alt Key


These keys are used along with other keys for
some special purposes.

 Shift Key
This key is used for two purposes.
 Some keys on the keyboard have two
symbols printed on them. For example,
Shift key is used to type the upper
symbols on such keys. For example, if you
want to type the question mark symbol (?),
follow these steps:
Step 1: Press and hold down the shift key
with one finger.
Step 2: Using another finger, press the
key with the ? symbol on it.

 It is also used in combination with Alphabet


keys to type capital letters, when the Caps
Lock key is OFF.
For example, if you want to type a capital A,
follow these steps:
Step 1: Press and hold down the shift key with
one finger.
Step 2: Using another finger, press the A
Alphabet key.

But, if the Caps lock key is ON and we use Shift


key with any Alphabet key, small letter will be
typed.
 Home Key
This key moves the cursor to the beginning of
the line.

This key moves the cursor to the end of the line.

Punctuation Keys
These keys are used to add a punctuation mark.
Some of the Punctuation mark. Some of the
Punctuation marks are typed using shift key.
