Types of
Keyboard Keys
1. Alphanumeric Keys:
• Letter Keys: Represent the 26 letters (a, b,c,d……z)
of the alphabet.
• Number Keys: Found above the letter keys and in the
numeric keypad, representing digits 0-9.
• Symbol Keys: Used in combination with the Shift key
to produce punctuation marks, symbols, and special
characters. Eg: @, #, $, % etc…

2. Control Keys:
• Shift Key: Modifies the output of other keys (e.g., uppercase letters,
alternate symbols).
• Ctrl Key (Control Key): Used in shortcuts for various actions (e.g.,
copy, paste, undo).
• Alt Key: Functions as a modifier, often used in combination with Ctrl
or Shift for specific commands.
• Enter Key: Confirms commands, starts new lines, and submits forms.
• Spacebar: Inserts a space between words.
3. Function Keys (F1–F12):
• Located at the top of the keyboard just after the Esc Key and
programmed for specific tasks, often used with other keys for
advanced functions.
• Example:
F1 commonly opens help menus,
F5 refreshes web pages.
4. Navigation Keys:
• It is used to change the cursor’s current position.
• Arrow Keys: Move the cursor or selection in different directions.
• Up, down, left, right
• Home Key: Moves the cursor to the beginning of a line or document.
• End Key: Moves the cursor to the end of a line or document.
• Page Up/Page Down: Scrolls up or down in documents and web
pages.
5. Numeric Keypad Keys:
• Number Keys: A separate set of number keys (0-9) for rapid
numerical input.
• Arithmetic Operators: Includes +, -, \, and / for
mathematical functions.
• Other Keys: May include Num Lock, Insert, Delete, Home,
and End.
6. Special Keys:
• Caps Lock: Toggles between uppercase and lowercase letters.
• Esc Key: Cancels or exits an operation.
• Backspace Key: Deletes characters to the left of the cursor.
• Delete Key: Deletes characters to the right of the cursor.
• Insert Key: Toggles between insert mode and overwrite mode.
• Tab Key: Moves the cursor forward by a set number of spaces (often
used for indentation).
