PROBLEM SET #3
Hands on Activity
“BRIDGE of HOPE and FAITH”

DISCUSSION
Trains, vehicles, and pedestrians all use bridges. They must survive the forces of nature
and span short or great distances. There are various bridge kinds, each of which is made for specific
strengths. For instance, a beam bridge can support heavy loads over a short distance, truss bridges
benefit from the triangle's strength, and suspension bridges can support torque and tension over a
long distance. Engineers must consider all of the forces that will be acting on a bridge when
designing it. The fundamental of deformable bodies principles involved in bridge construction can
be understood through practical experimentation. Students have a greater understanding of a man-
made structure that they frequently meet in cities and towns as a result of this experience.

OBJECTIVES
 To identify the forces acting on bridges.
 To determine which bridge can hold the greatest load.

MATERIALS
 500 Barbeque sticks
 Wood/craft glue or any adhesive substance.

CRITERIA
1. Bridge must be able to hold a pre-determined weight (2 kgs or 5kgs)

CONSTRAINTS
 Can use no more than 500 barbeque sticks.

TESTING PROCESS
1. Place the pre-determined weight on the bridge for one full minute.
2. The goal to test the designs to meet the minimum load. However, it’s fun to keep adding
weight to the structure to meet the critical load resulting in a crumbling bridge.

QUESTIONS
1. What forces act on a bridge?
2. What are some of the different types of bridges?
3. What are tension and torque? What do they have to do with bridges?
4. Which shapes and designs are the strongest?
5. How can bridges be built to deal with weather and other wear?
6. What is your hypothesis for each bridge you will build? Which material and shape will
work the best?
