How to Discover and Activate your

Computer Account – on the Web

To use a University of Stirling computer lab, access the University Portal or computer
network, you need two things, a Username (user ID) and a password. Without them you
can’t access any computer system.

When you are in possession of a student registration number or staff number you can
find out your username and activate your computer account by running the Account
Discovery process.

This can be done from the following web page:

https://portal.stir.ac.uk/discovery

1. The Information Services Regulations will

be displayed, please read these before
you proceed.

2. Click the Accept button at the foot of the

screen. If you are not happy to accept
the regulations you will not be able to
proceed. If you have any queries please
contact the Information Centre on 01786
467250

3. Another page will open.

Enter your unique 7 digit Student

/8 digit Staff Number and your
date of birth.

Your date of birth must be

entered as dd/mm/yyyy e.g.
06/06/1970.

Then click the Discover button.

4. If your account has been successfully located two further screens relating to Data
Protection and University Rules and Regulations will be displayed.

You must read and accept these by clicking the “Accept” button, before you will be
able to proceed.

5. The next page you see will contain your username, university email address and
domain.

Take a note of these now. For security reasons you will only be able to carry out
this “Discovery” process once.
6. Before your account can be
used it must be activated by
setting a password and a
security question. Please
ensure that the password is at
least 6 characters in length
and includes numbers and
letters.

Select a security question then

enter a one word answer. This
information may be used as
additional identification in the
future.

Enter a personal email

address, if you have one, to
enable us to email you a
security alert if your password
is ever reset via the portal.

7. Click the Set Password

button

If there is any problem setting the password or security question one of the following
error messages will be displayed:

If that happens simply set the password and

security answer again.

8. When the next window appears you have

completed the “Discovery” process, your account
will have been activated.

9. Close your web browser.

10. You can now use your new username & password to logon to the University Portal
and computer network.
