LEARNING CONTENTS

INTRODUCTION
There is considerable confusion about exactly what constitutes a learning outcome and how (or if) it is
distinguished from learning objectives or competencies. Even in the education literature, the usage of these
terms seems contradictory at times period sometimes it is instructive to find definitions in the dictionary.
According to the American heritage dictionary the learning terms are defined as: competence the state or
quality of being competent. Properly or well qualified, capable. Objective: Something worked toward or
striven for, a goal. Outcome: A natural result, consequences.

COMPETENCY
 A general statement that describes the desired knowledge, skills and behaviors of a student
graduating from a program (are completing a course).
 Competency is commonly defined as the applied skills and knowledge that enable people to
successfully perform in a professional, educational, and other life contract.
OBJECTIVE
 A very general statement about the larger goals of a course or program.
 When writing learning objectives, ensure they are clear, specific, and measurable, describing what
learners should be able to do or achieve by the end of the instruction.
 Use action verbs to indicate the described behaviors or outcomes, such as “describe”, “create”,
“analyze” and “evaluate.”
OUTCOME
 A very specific statement that describes exactly what the student will be able to do in some
measurable way.
 There may be more than one measurable outcome defined for a given competency.
 EXAMPLES OF LEARNING OUTCOME
- Knowledge-based outcome: “the students will be able to explain the significance of surgical events
within a given time.”
- Skill-based outcome: “learners will demonstrate the ability to use Java programming language to
create simple applications.”
- Attitude-based outcome: “participants will show positive change in attitude towards Environmental
Conservation practices”
