Tutorial sheet 8: Riemann integration and improper integral

Exercise 1: A function f is defined as follows:

 1 if 1 < x ≤ 1 , n = 0, 1, 2, . . . .
f (x) = 2n 2n+1 2n
0 if x = 0.

Show that the function f is Riemann integrable on [0, 1].

Exercise 2: Let f be a bounded function on [a, b]. Prove that, if there is a partition P of [a, b] such that
L(P, f ) = U (P, f ), then f is a constant function.
Exercise 3: Let f be a bounded function on [a, b] such that |f | is integrable. Is it necessary that f is
integrable?

Exercise 4: Let f be integrable on [a, b] and g(x) = f (t)dt. Show the following:
a

(a) If f (x) ≥ 0 for all x ∈ [a, b], then g is monotonically increasing.

(b) If f (x) ≤ 0 for all x ∈ [a, b], then g is monotonically decreasing.

Exercise 5: Let f : R → R be a continuous function and λ ∈ R, λ ̸= 0. For x ∈ R, set

1 x
Z
g(x) = f (t) sin(λ(x − t)) dt
λ 0

Show that g ′′ (x) + λ2 g(x) = f (x) for all x ∈ R and g(0) = 0 = g ′ (0).
