- Course Title: Listening-Speaking 3
- Location: Block D3, HNUE
- Contact hours per week: 3 50-minute periods each week
- Assumed Background:
ENGL221 Listening and Speaking is a compulsory three-credit course designed for English majors. As a second-year subject, it
requires prerequisite knowledge on the subject of ENGL 121.
- Course Description:
This skill-based integrated course is designed to boost students’ English language proficiency from B1+ to B2 level according to
Common European Framework of Reference.

II. Learning Objectives
After successfully completing this course, students should be able to:
1. understand straightforward information about everyday topics, identifying both general messages and specific
information, provided people speak clearly in a familiar accent.
2. start a conversation on topics that are familiar or of personal interest and can keep it going by expressing and responding
to suggestions, opinions, attitudes, advice, etc.
Specifically, in terms of listening, students will be able to:
● follow a lecture or talk within their own field, if the subject matter is familiar and the presentation is clearly structured

● follow TV programs on topic of personal interest when people speak clearly

● understand information in announcements and other recorded, factual texts if they are delivered in clear standard speech
In terms of speaking, students will be able to:
● describe an incident, making the main points clear

● express feelings about something they have experienced

● present clear detailed description on a wide range of subjects related to their field of interests.

● explain a view point on a topic

IV. Assessment
1. Assessment summary

2. Assessment details:
Attendance: Students are required to attend at least 80% of the total class hours. If students do not, they are not allowed
to take the end-of-term test.
On-going assessment and mid-of-term test (30%)
A. Mid-of-term test (10%)
- Type: During class
- Due date: week 9
- Task description:
+ Listening: Multiple choice, Sentence completion, Multiple matching
+ Speaking: compare and contrast photos, discussion

B. Speaking recordings & In-class speaking (10%):
- Type: In-class and at home
- Due date: Every week
- Task description:
+ In-class speaking: Students will discuss the questions and follow the tasks assigned by teachers during classes.
+ Speaking records: students are required to submit recordings of various topics to the teacher and give feedback to
other students.
C. Listening mini-tests (10%)
- Type: During class
- Due date: Listening mini-tests 1 and 2 will take place in week 6 and week 12 respectively
- Time allowed: 25 minutes approximately/ each
- Task description: Multiple choice, Sentence completion, Multiple matching
End-of-term Test (60%)
A. Listening
- Type: Final exam
- Time allowed: 30 minutes approximately
- Task description: Students will listen to different recordings and answer follow-up questions on the basis of what is
stated or implied on the recordings (Short talks, Sentence completion, Multiple matching).
B. Speaking
- Type: Final exam
- Task descriptions: Students are given a set of questions about different topics to talk about as the first part of the exam.
For the second part, they are given two photographs to compare and contrast. Part three is a collaborative task in
which two students will talk about a situation together by discussing prompted ideas.

3. Course Policies
- Students are required to attend at least 80% of class hours. If they are absent for over 20% of the whole course, they are not
permitted to take the final exam.
- Two 15-minute late arrivals are counted as an absence.

- Requests for the granting of extensions must be made in writing (not via email) to the lecturers at least 24 hours prior to the
submission date. The request must also contain documentation satisfactorily supporting the request. If an extension is
approved, the new agreed date for submission will be noted
- Students who are unable to sit or complete a scheduled final exam must apply for a deferred examination to the course
coordinators.
