Process Capability
1- A process in control has associated control charts based on n=7. The 𝑥̅- chart of the process has
an UCL=60.22, LCL= 55.82, CL= 58.02. The R-Chart has CL= 0.0331, UCL= 0.792, and LCL=0.
a) Compute estimated mean μ, and standard deviation σ of this process.
b) If specification limits are 58± 0.04, comment on whether the process is centered and
how capable it is of meeting specifications.
2- For a food organization, the specification limits of the proportion of milk in the cappuccino
beverage are 54% and 64%. Samples of 100 drinks are prepared and the mean of milk proportion
is found to be 61% with standard deviation of 3% (LCL=52%,UCL=70%). Calculate Cp, Cpk and parts
per million for this process then apply a suitable modification to improve the percentage of
acceptance.
3- The diameter of a forged part has specifications of 120±5 mm. A sample of 25 parts chosen from
the process gives a sample mean of 122 mm with a sample standard deviation of 2 mm.
a) Find the Cpk index for the process and comment on its value.
b) What is the proportion of non-conforming parts assuming normality?
c) What do you suggest to reduce the proportion of non-conforming parts in b?
4- Random samples observations on the thickness of paint of refrigerators are collected during 10
shifts. The data are listed in the following table:
Shift Thickness (mm)
number 1 2 3 4 5
1 70 65 72 69 67
2 75 70 69 67 72
3 70 70 70 65 65
4 75 67 69 70 70
5 72 69 70 69 73
6 70 67 67 72 75
7 69 65 72 75 70
8 72 70 70 70 72
9 70 67 75 69 73
10 69 70 69 72 70
Given that specification limits are 82 and 58. Calculate the process capability.
5- Specifications for a certain job for washers with inside diameter of 0.3±0.005 inch. If the inside
diameter of the washers supplied by given manufacturer, follow normal distribution with mean
= 0.302 inch and standard deviation =0.003
a) What percentage of these washers will meet specifications?
b) Apply suitable process positioning formulation to increase accepted percentage.
