MUSIC 6 Lesson 1: RHYTHM
* Notes and Rests are the “atoms” of music as they are the basic
building units
in written music.
Musical Notes - are musical symbols that represent the pitch of sounds
- are symbols placed on the staff to denote certain tones to
be sounded
- they have different shapes that identify their value
- the position of the note on lines and spaces of the staff
determine its pitch
Notes Names Time Values
---------- > whole note 4 beats
---------- > half note 2 beats
---------- > quarter note 1 beat
---------- > eighth note ½ beat
---------- > sixteenth note ¼ beat
If a musical note represents duration of a tone, the rest, on the other
hand, represents silence.
Musical Rest - means silence
- In singing, rest signs give the singer a time to breathe and
pause
Rests Names Time Values
---------- > whole rest 4 beats
---------- > half rest 2 beats
---------- > quarter rest 1 beat
---------- > eighth rest ½ beat
---------- > sixteenth rest ¼ beat
Activity 1: Add the value of each set of notes and draw the single
note of
its equivalent.
1. + + + = __________________________
2. + = __________________________
3. + + = ________________________
4. + + = ________________________
5. + + + = ______________________
Activity 2: Add the value of each set of notes and rests. Write on
the blank
YES if the set of notes and rests has equal values and
NO if not.
1. + = + = _________________
2. + + = = _________________
3. + = = _____________________
4. + + = = _____________________
5. + = = _______________________

MUSIC 6 Lesson 2: METER
* Meter - is the rhythmic structure in music
- it can be categorized as simple, compound or complex
* Simple meter – is a meter where each beat in a measure can be
subdivided
into two.
2
2
* Compound meter- is a meter where each beat can be subdivided by
three
16
* Complex meter- is a meter that does not fit into the usual duple, triple or
quadruple category.
Activity 1: Fill in the blank a note to complete the given meter.
1. 3 3. 4

Activity 2: Tell if the given meter is simple, compound or complex.

MUSIC 6 Lesson 3: TIME SIGNATURE
* Time Signature – is always notated with two numbers and is written like
a
fraction in mathematics.
Upper number - denotes the number of beats for each measure of
the staff
Lower number – tells the note that receives one beat
Example: In 4, there are four ( 4 ) beats in a measure
4
and a quarter note ( ) receives one beat
Activity 1: Match column A with column B.
A B
1. a. receives one beat in 4
4
2. b. receives one beat in 4
2
3. c. receives one beat in 4
8
Activity 2: Explain the following time signatures.
1. 2 -
4 ___________________________________________________________
2. 3 -
8 ___________________________________________________________
3. 2 -
2 ___________________________________________________________

* Conducting – is the art of directing a chorale performance or orchestra
through movements of the hands, arms, head and facial
expression of the conductor
- the conductor has the duty to unify performances, set the
tempo and shape the sound of the ensemble
- in conducting, the smaller downbeats are used for faster
music
while larger downbeats are used for slower music
Activity 1: Using the hand movements, follow and learn the
different
conducting patterns.
Activity 2 : Conduct the songs below.
1. Pilipinas Kong Mahal 3

2. Lupang Hinirang 4 2

3. Cabatuan Hymn 4
