MUSIC 6 Lesson 1: RHYTHM

* Notes and Rests are the “atoms” of music as they are the basic
building units
in written music.

Musical Notes - are musical symbols that represent the pitch of sounds
- are symbols placed on the staff to denote certain tones to
be sounded
- they have different shapes that identify their value
- the position of the note on lines and spaces of the staff
determine its pitch

Notes Names Time Values

---------- > whole note 4 beats

---------- > half note 2 beats

---------- > quarter note 1 beat

---------- > eighth note ½ beat

---------- > sixteenth note ¼ beat

If a musical note represents duration of a tone, the rest, on the other

hand, represents silence.

Musical Rest - means silence

- In singing, rest signs give the singer a time to breathe and
pause

Rests Names Time Values

---------- > whole rest 4 beats

---------- > half rest 2 beats

---------- > quarter rest 1 beat

---------- > eighth rest ½ beat

---------- > sixteenth rest ¼ beat

Activity 1: Add the value of each set of notes and draw the single
note of
its equivalent.

1. + + + = __________________________

2. + = __________________________

3. + + = ________________________

4. + + = ________________________

5. + + + = ______________________

Activity 2: Add the value of each set of notes and rests. Write on
the blank
YES if the set of notes and rests has equal values and
NO if not.

1. + = + = _________________

2. + + = = _________________

3. + = = _____________________

4. + + = = _____________________
