Experiment - 7

Name: Ansari Mohammed Shanouf Valijan

Class: B.E. Computer Engineering, Semester - VII
UID: 2021300004
Batch: M

Aim:
To perform healthcare data analysis using tableau.

Objective:
 To get familiar with tableau’s interface and its functionalities.
 To plot different graphs for the selected dataset.
 To summarize the analysis by creating a dashboard of the graphs.

Outcomes:
 To be able to work with tableau for data analysis.
 To be able to properly demonstrate the analysis conducted.

Theory:

Tableau is a powerful data visualization tool that enables users to convert complex data into
interactive and shareable dashboards. Its drag-and-drop interface allows even those
without extensive technical skills to create compelling visual representations of data,
facilitating a deeper understanding of trends and patterns. By connecting to various data
sources, including spreadsheets and databases, Tableau empowers users to analyze large
datasets efficiently and dynamically.
One of the key features of Tableau is its ability to create a wide range of visualizations, from
simple bar charts to intricate heat maps and scatter plots. Users can apply filters and
parameters to their dashboards, allowing for real-time data exploration. This interactivity
helps stakeholders make informed decisions based on up-to-date insights. Additionally,
Tableau supports calculated fields, enabling users to perform complex analyses directly
within the tool, further enhancing its functionality.

Collaboration is another strength of Tableau, as it allows users to share their dashboards

through Tableau Server or Tableau Online. This capability ensures that teams can access the
same data insights and collaborate effectively, regardless of their location. The ability to
embed dashboards in web pages or applications also broadens the reach of data
storytelling, making it easier to share findings with a wider audience. Overall, Tableau not
only simplifies data visualization but also fosters a culture of data-driven decision-making
within organizations.

Dataset Description:
The dataset considered for the analysis is that of a specific healthcare centre, comprising of
details of all the patients associated with the same. It includes respective patient’s disease
history, the doctor in-charge, department under consideration, severeness of the disease,
etc.

Implementation:
Following are the various graphs that were generated through tableau using the above-
mentioned dataset-

[1] Gender v/s Average Duration of Stay

This bar chart illustrates that both females and males have similar average stays at around
20.5 days, while individuals categorized as "Other" have significantly shorter stays,
averaging 9.5 days. This could indicate differences in treatment requirements or patient
needs across gender categories.

[2] Distribution of Patients by Departments

This chart breaks down patient numbers across various departments, with Gynaecology
having the largest patient share at 343,478, followed by other high-volume departments
such as Radiotherapy, Surgery, and TB & Chest Diseases. These figures reveal key areas
where patient demand is concentrated.
[3] Disease Severity Density

This density plot categorizes disease severity across patients as Minor, Moderate, or
Extreme. A significant concentration of patients falls under Moderate severity, while fewer
cases are classified as Extreme, suggesting that most hospital cases involve intermediate-
level care needs.

[4] Total Admission Deposit Accumulated by Departments

Showing the financial contribution of each department, this graph indicates that
departments like Gynaecology and Surgery accumulate substantial deposits, reflecting
either higher patient volumes or potentially higher costs associated with treatment in these
departments.
[5] Number of Patients Under Specific Doctors

This bar chart tracks patient load by doctor, with Dr. Sarah handling the highest patient
count at 99,596, closely followed by Dr. Olivia and Dr. Simon. The data emphasizes the
differing caseloads managed by individual doctors, potentially reflecting specialization or
availability.

[6] Total Admission Deposit Accumulated by Gender

This graph demonstrates a total accumulation of about 2.4 billion Dollars by the respective
hospital under consideration. A major portion of this amount seems to be contributed by
female patients, which accounts for approximately two-thirds of the revenue till date.
Following is the dashboard that was created, summarizing the analysis performed-

Conclusion:
By performing this experiment, I was able to get familiar with tableau and was able to
appreciate its drag-and-drop functionality for data visualization. I was able to successfully
use the said tool to perform analysis on healthcare dataset of a particular hospital and was
able to visualize the results with various types of graphs. Further, I was able to summarize
the analysis by creating a dashboard. In brief, this experiment aided me in understanding
the convenient role tableau plays in data analysis.
