D: Concept Development

Praise be Jesus, Mary, and Joseph in you CARDINALS!

I hope to guide you in understanding and accomplishing our
learning target for this module.
Today, we will learn about the Formation of the Solar system.
This topic discusses and recognizes the uniqueness of the
Earth.
Shall we proceed now?

This module aims to guide you in recognizing the uniqueness of Earth, being the
only planet in the solar system with properties necessary to support life I am sure
that you are already eager to get started. However, there are some things that you
need to remember to learn most from this module.

1. Take the pre-test before proceeding to the lessons. Your score in the test will
give you an idea how much time you need to develop to each lesson.
2. Read the instructions carefully.
3. Before doing the activities, make sure that the materials are already prepared.
4. Answer the Self-test.

2|Page
Modified true or false: Write true if the statement is true and false if the statement if wrong.

______1. A Star system is also called “Stellar system”

______2. Nebular Hypothesis theory failed to account for the distribution of angular momentum in the solar system.

______3. Accretion is the process of growth or increase, typically by the gradual accumulation of additional layers or
matter.

______4. A planetesimal is an object formed from dust, of stars rock, and other materials.

______5. A protoplanet is a large planetary embryo that originated within a protoplanetary disc. (Planet in the making)

Earth Science is the study of our Earth, its life – supporting properties, materials, and geologic processes
occurring in tis layers; and important natural changes in its over- all environment. It is interrelated with other
sciences: Geology, oceanology, meterology, and astronomy.

What is the composition of the Solar System? Star, Natural satellites, Asteroids, Planets, (Mercury,
Venus, Mars, Saturn, Neptune, Earth, Jupiter, and Uranus). Comets and interplanetary medium.
A Star system also called “Stellar system” is a small number of stars that orbit each other. It should be
noted that Earth belongs to the solar system, which is a type of star system because the sun is a star.

1. Nebular Hypothesis ( Emmanuel Kant 1724 –

1804 and Pierre – Simon Laplace 1749-1827 In the
1700s Emanuel Swedenborg, Immanuel Kant, and Pierre-
Simon Laplace independently thought of a rotating
gaseous cloud that cools and contracts in the middle to
form the sun and the rest into a disc that become the
planets. He assumed that the mutual gravitational
attractions of the particles caused them to start moving
and colliding at which point chemical forces kept them
bonded together. As some of these aggregates became
larger, they grow more rapidly, ultimately forming the
planets. This nebular theory failed to account for the
distribution of angular momentum in the solar system

2. Encounter Hypotheses Buffon’s (1749) Sun-comet

encounter that sent matter to form planet; and James
Jeans’ (1917) Sun-star encounter that would have drawn
from the sun matter that would condense to planets , T.C.
Chamberlain and F. R. Moulton’s (1904)
planetesimal hypothesis involving a star much bigger than
the Sun passing by the Sun and draws gaseous filaments
from both out which planetisimals were formed;

matter. A planetesimal is an object formed from dust, rock, and other materials. A protoplanet is a large
planetary embryo that originated within a protoplanetary disc. (Planet in the making)

3. Protoplanet Hypothesis About 4.6 billion years ago,

in the Orion arm of the Milky Way galaxy, a slowly
rotating gas and dust cloud dominated by hydrogen and
helium starts to contract due to gravity

Take note that protoplanet theory incorporates many of the

components of the nebular hypothesis but adds some new
aspects from modern knowledge of fluids and states of matter.

As most of the mass move to the center to eventually become a

proto-Sun, the remaining materials form a disc that will
eventually become the planets and momentum is transferred
outwards.”

Due to collisions, fragments of dust and solid matter begin sticking to each other to form larger and larger bodies
from meter to kilometer in size. These proto-planets are accretions of frozen water, ammonia, methane, silicon, aluminum,
iron, and other metals in rock and mineral grains enveloped in hydrogen and helium

High-speed collisions with large objects destroys much of the mantle of Mercury, puts Venus in retrograde rotation.
Collision of the Earth with large object produces the moon. This is supported by the composition of the moon very similar
to the Earth's Mantle when the proto-Sun is established as a star, its solar wind blasts hydrogen, helium, and volatiles from
the inner planets to beyond Mars to form the gas giants leaving behind a system we know today.

Earth is one special planet.

It has liquid water, plate tectonics, and an atmosphere that shelters it from the worst of the sun's rays. But many
scientists agree our planet's most special feature might just be us.

"It?s the only planet we know of that has life," said Alan Boss, a planet formation theorist at the Carnegie
Institution of Washington in Washington, D.C.

7|Page
Though other bodies in our solar system, such as Saturn's moon Titan,
seem like they could have once been hospitable to some form of life,
and scientists still have hope of eventually digging up microbes
beneath the surface of Mars, Earth is still the only world known to
support life.

Goldilocks planet
Earth's water is also special in that it has remained liquid for so long.
How has Earth been able to hold on to its oceans while those on other
planets freeze or fry?

"Many details as to why Earth is the only planet with liquid water in our solar system need to be worked out,"
said Diana Valencia, a graduate student in Earth and Planetary Sciences at Harvard University. "Certainly the
distance to the sun has made it possible. A planet much farther in would receive too much energy from the sun,
and a planet too far out would quickly freeze."

Our planet's Goldilocks-like "just right" location in the solar system has helped, as has its system of plate
tectonics ? the slip-sliding movements of Earth's crust that are thought to have created the planet's towering
mountain ranges and plummeting ocean depths.

"The fact that Earth has plate tectonics allows for the carbon-silicate cycle to operate over geological timescales,"
Valencia said. "With the carbon-silicate cycle, the levels of carbon in the atmosphere get regulated to keep the
surface temperature around that of liquid water."

Plate tectonics and water are inextricably linked. Not only does plate tectonics enable liquid water to exist by way
of regulating the temperature, but many scientists have argued water enables plate tectonics to happen.

Earth is the only planet circling our sun on which life as

we know it could (and does) exist.Like no other planet,
ours is covered with green vegetation, enormous blue-
green oceans containing thousands of islands, thousands
of streams and rivers, huge land masses called
continents, mountains, ice caps, and deserts that produce
a spectacular variety of color and texture. Some form of
life is found in virtually every ecological niche on the
earth's surface. Even in extremely cold Antarctica, hardy
microscopic beings thrive in ponds, tiny wingless insects
live in patches of moss and lichen, and plants grow and
flower yearly. From the apex of the atmosphere to the
bottom of the oceans, from the coldest part of the poles
to the warmest part of the equator, life thrives here. To
this day, no evidence of life has been found on any other
planet.

The earth is immense in size, about 8,000 miles in

diameter, with a mass calculated at roughly 5.97×10 24 kilograms. The earth is on average 93 million miles from
the sun. If our planet traveled much faster in its 584-million-mile-long journey around the sun, its orbit would
become much larger and it would move farther away from the sun, resulting in average temperatures that are too
cold for life to exist. If it traveled much slower in its orbit, the earth would move closer to the sun, resulting in
average temperatures that are too high for life to exist. Earth's rotation and axial tilt also keep surface
temperatures from becoming too extreme.
