CLEANING PROCEDURES − SPOP−01
Task 70−21−00−110−047:
1. SPOP 1 − Degreasing The Exterior Of The Engine
WARNING: REFER TO THE MANUFACTURER'S MATERIAL SAFETY DATA
SHEETS FOR CONSUMABLE MATERIAL'S INFORMATION SUCH
AS: HAZARDOUS INGREDIENTS, PHYSICAL/CHEMICAL
CHARACTERISTICS, FIRE, EXPLOSION, REACTIVITY, HEALTH
HAZARD DATA, PRECAUTIONS FOR SAFE HANDLING, USE AND
CONTROL MEASURES.
NOTE: This procedure removes grease, oil, hydraulic fluid, and
loose soil from engine exterior surfaces (that is, the
outer surfaces of the engine) or external parts, which
decreases the time necessary to clean disassembled QEC
(Quick Engine Change) parts.
NOTE: This procedure does not remove hard, baked−on carbon.
NOTE: Refer to 70−20−00, General−01 for additional
requirements.
A. Procedure
(1) Remove grease from external surfaces of the engine by
Method A or Method B:
(a) METHOD A
1 Apply masks to all openings of internal
areas of the engine (such as, the inlet,
exhaust, all bleeds, open fuel lines, open oil
lines, breather tubes, and open electrical
connectors).
2 Clean by one of the subsequent procedures:
NOTE: Service experience shows that the
gel−type cleaners are better than the
spray, steam, and foam solutions on very
dirty engines because the gel cleaners
stay on the engine better than the
spray, steam, and foam solutions, which
drain off the engine during the soak
time.

a Mix one of these materials with water to
make a cleaner solution at a concentration
that is equal to or less than the maximum
specified concentration, then apply this
solution as a spray, steam, or foam:

SPMC 181 25% by volume
SPMC 195 50% by volume
SPMC 207 30% by volume
SPMC 233 20% by volume
b Apply SPMC 109, SPMC 110, SPMC 112, or SPMC
159 gel−type cleaner, as received, with the
correct spray applicator. Do not use a
steam machine to apply the gel−type cleaner.
NOTE: It is necessary to use a special
spray applicator to apply the
gel−type cleaners. Refer to the gel
manufacturer's instructions for the
correct applicator.
3 Let the cleaner solution or gel−type cleaner
stay on the engine for 10 − 20 minutes.
R 4 Flush the external surfaces of the engine fully
with warm or hot water, or with steam.
5 Remove the masks.
(b) METHOD B (Local Application Only). Use one of the
subsequent procedures:
R 1 Aqueous cleaner procedure.

CLEANING PROCEDURES − SPOP−01
R a Apply SPMC 148−1, SPMC 148−2, SPMC 148−3 or
R SPMC 148−4 aqueous cleaner, as received, by
R spray or with a cloth. If necessary, use a
R soft non−metallic brush or a PMC 4095 or PMC
R 4435 scrub pad to clean the engine.
R 2 Solvent procedure.
R WARNING: THE SOLVENTS IN THIS PROCEDURE ARE
R FLAMMABLE. IF YOU DO NOT LET THE
R TEMPERATURE OF HOT ENGINE PARTS
R DECREASE BEFORE YOU USE THESE
R SOLVENTS ON THE PARTS, THERE WILL
R BE AN INCREASED RISK OF FIRE.
R a If engine parts are hot, let the temperature
R of the parts decrease to a temperature that
R is sufficiently cool to touch the parts
R without gloves, and then continue to the
R next step in this procedure.
R b Use a non−metallic brush, a PMC 4095 or PMC
R 4435 scrub pad, or a clean cloth to apply
R one of the solvents in the subsequent list:
R · A solvent from SPOP 208. Refer
R to 70−21−00, SPOP−208 (Task
R 70−21−00−110−040).
R · SPMC 245 cleaner solvent.
R c Dry with a clean cloth.
(2) When it is necessary to clean engine external component
parts after removal of the parts from the engine, do
one of the subsequent procedures to clean the parts:
(a) Do Method A above.
(b) Do Method B above.
(c) Do the subsequent procedure:
1 Apply PMC 9001 Stoddard Petroleum
Solvent to the parts with a brush in a
solvent−recirculating parts washer or
washer/soak tank that uses a recirculating pump
to supply filtered solvent to the brush through
a flexible supply hose.
2 Dry the parts with a clean cloth.
