electrostatic constant: 1/4 = 8.99 × 10 N ⋅ m /C
permittivity of vacuum:  = 8.85 × 10 C /N ⋅ m

1. A charge q is located at the lower corner of a cube and charge -2q is at the cube’s
center, as show in Fig. 1. The edge length of cube is d. Calculate the electric flux
through the top side (a) if only the charge -2q exist, (7 pts) (b) if only the charge q
exist, (10 pts) (c) if consider total? (4 pts)

FIG. 1.

2. A long, slender, insulating rod carries a uniform charge distribution of 4.0 C/m
along its length. This rod is aligned along the same axis as a conductive cylindrical
shell with an internal radius of 4.0 cm and an external radius of 12 cm. The total
charge on the shell is zero. (a) Calculate the electric field at a point located 20 cm
away from the axis of the shell (5 pts). Determine the surface charge density on
the (b) inner face (5 pts) and (c) outer face of the shell. (3 pts)

3. A insulating sphere with a radius of 5.00 cm has a volume charge density that
depends on the radial distance r from the center, described by the equation ρ =
(15.0 nC/m³) r/R, where R is the radius of the sphere. (a) Determine the total charge
contained within the sphere. (4 pts) (b) Determine the electric field at the center of
the sphere (4 pts) (c) at half the radius (5 pts), and (d) at the outer surface of the
sphere. (3 pts)

4. A liquid sphere with a charge of 250 fC has an electric potential of 500 mV at its
surface (with V = 0 at infinity). (a) Find the radius of the liquid sphere. (4 pts) (b)
If two liquid sphere, each with the same charge and radius, combine to form one
larger liquid sphere, what will be the electric potential at the surface of the
resulting liquid sphere? (4 pts)
5. (a) Determine the electric field at point P (4.0𝑥 + 5.0𝑦 + 2.0𝑧̂ ) m, given that the
electric potential in the region is described by V = 2.0√𝑥𝑦 𝑧 . where 𝑥,𝑦,𝑧 are
all in metre and V in volt. (11 pts) (b) If a sphere with a charge of 40 pC is placed
at point P, what is the electric force acting on the sphere? (6 pts)

6. The thin plastic rod shown in Fig. 2 has length L =20.0 cm and a nonuniform linear
charge density 𝜆 = 𝑐√𝑥, where c = 30.0 pC/m . . With V = 0 at infinity, (a) find
the electric potential at point P on the axis, at distance d = 5.00 cm from one end.
(15 pts) (b) Compute electric field. (10 pts) (Hint: You will probably resort to a
-

trigonometric substitution.)
