CH. ELECTRICITY (MLP)
Q1. A 4 Ω resistance wire is doubled on itself. Calculate the new resistance of the wire (1 Ω).
Q2. Calculate the resistance of 1 km long copper wire of radius 1 mm. (Resistivity of copper = 1.72 x 1 0-8 Ω m.)
Q3. Two wires of same material are having length L and 2L. Compare their Resistance and resistivity.
Q4.A piece of wire is redrawn by pulling it to triple its length. Compare the new resistance with its original
value.
Q5. What is the maximum resistance which can be made using five resistors each of 1/5 Ω?
Q6. What is the minimum resistance which can be made using five resistors each of 1/5 Ω?
Q7. A student carries out an experiment and plots the V-I graph of three samples of nichrome wire with
resistances R1, R2 and R3 respectively. Compare the three resistances.

Q 8. Three resistances of 5 Ω, 10 Ω and 30 Ω are connected in parallel with a battery of 12 V. Find out
(a)the current passing through each resistance, (b)the total current of the circuit,
(c) the equivalent resistance of the circuit.
Q9. Three resistors are joined in parallel. A current of 7.5 A flows due to 30 V battery. If two resistors
have resistances of 10 Ω and 12 Ω. Find the value of the third. Also find the current passing through
each resistor.
Q10. Two metallic wires A and B are connected in parallel. Wire A has length l and radius r, wire B has a
length 2l and radius 2r. Compute the ratio of the total resistance of the parallel combination and
the resistance of wire A.
Q 11. If an electric heater consumes electricity at the rate of 500W and the potential difference between
the two terminals of electric circuit is 250V, calculate the electric current and resistance through the
circuit.
Q 12. An electric bulb is rated 220 V and 100 W. When it is operated on 110 V, Calculate the power
consumed.
Q13. A piece of wire of resistance R is cut into five equal parts. These parts are then connected in parallel. If
the equivalent resistance of this combination is R′, find the ratio R’/R.
Q 14. Two lamps, one rated 100 W at 220 V, and the other 60 W at 220 V, are connected in parallel to the
electric mains supply. What current is drawn from the line if the supply voltage is 220 V?
Q 15. Several electric bulbs designed to be used on a 220 V electric supply line, are rated 10 W. How many
lamps can be connected in parallel with each other across the two wires of 220 V line if the maximum
allowable current is 5A.
Q 16. Which uses more energy, a 250 W TV set in 1 h, or a 1200 W toaster in 10 mins?
Q 17. An electric heater of resistance 8 ohm draws 15 A from the service mains for 2 h. Calculate the rate at
which heat is developed in the heater.
Q 18. A household uses a refrigerator of rating 400 W (10 h), two fans 100 W each (12h) & 6 tube lights
18 W each ( 6 h)daily. Calculate the bill of the household for month of June if cost per unit of electric
energy is Rs. 3.00.
Q 19. Two conducting wires of the same material and of equal lengths and equal diameters are first
connected in series and then parallel in a circuit across the same potential difference. Find the ratio of
heat produced in series and parallel combinations.
Q 20. Compare the power used in the 2 ohm resistor in each of the following cases:
(a) a 6 V battery in series with 1 ohm & 2 ohm resistors.
(b) A 4 V battery in parallel with 12 ohm & 2 ohm resistors
Q 21. Two students perform the experiments on series & parallel combinations of two given resistors &
plot the following V-I graphs. Which of the graphs are correctly labeled in terms of the series & parallel.
