CLL 331: Tutorial Sheet 1
(Assume Stokes flow for all the questions)
Q 1. Give ten examples of suspensions and identify the dispersed phase and the continuous phase.
Q 2. Why dilute suspensions are studied in such details? Do we use them?
Q 3. Evaluate (vector/tensor calculus) -
a.b = ?, aXb =?, ab = ?, \del.a =?, \delXa = ?, \dela = ?
For a = xi + yj , b = 2xi -yj
Q 4. Solve for a single rigid spherical particle settling in a stagnant fluid at Low Reynolds number (hint:go
over notes from FM course). Calculate the drag force acting on the particle.
Q 5. What is the difference between Stokes flow and laminar flow? Explain using Navier Stokes
equation.
Q 6. What is Newton’s law of viscosity? Will the viscosity increase or decrease when particles, droplets
(of low or high viscosity), or bubbles are added in the fluid? Compare your results with thermal
conductivity for composite media and comment.
Q 7. Calculate the terminal velocity of a quartz (sp. Gravity =1.20) sphere, 1 μm in diameter, in an infinite
medium of glycerol (viscosity = 950 cP, density =1.26 kg/litre). Calculate the Reynolds no of the particle.
Q 8. Determine the diameter of a sphere with sp gravity 4.0 having the same magnitude of terminal
settling velocity as the particle in the above question.
Q 9. Use Monte Carlo simulations to find out the area of a circle of diameter, a when area of a square is
known as a function of its side. (Or calculate the value of \pi using Monte Carlo simulations when we
know area of a circle is \pi a^2/4 and area of a square circumscribing it is a^2.)
Q 10. Plot mean square displacement for (lets say 10^4) particles in one dimension (x) vs time, t using
Monte Carlo simulation when the particles move by a unit step distance in +x or –x direction with equal
probability in a unit time. Plot this mean square displacement vs time.

Q 11. Draw the streamlines for the rotational flow and extensional flow component of simple shear
flow, 𝑣! = 𝛾̇ 𝑦, 𝑣" = 0.
