Petition for strict Marijuana tracking.
Marijuana has long been a contentious issue in the Philippines, with debates intensifying around its potential
medicinal benefits, economic implications, and the social justice concerns stemming from its criminalization.
Marijuana is the second most used drug in the Philippines as of 2022 (Dangerous Drugs Board,2022).One of the
most significant arguments for marijuana legalization is its potential medicinal value. Research indicates that
cannabis can effectively alleviate various medical conditions, such as chronic pain, epilepsy, and mental health
disorders. A study published in the Journal of Pain Research highlights the efficacy of cannabinoids in pain
management (McCormick et al., 2018).
In 2019, the Philippine Congress passed the Compassionate Use of Medical Cannabis Bill, aiming to provide access
to medical marijuana for patients with debilitating conditions (Republic Act No. 11215). The criminalization of
marijuana has disproportionately affected marginalized communities in the Philippines. Law enforcement practices
often target low-income individuals and communities, resulting in arrests and incarceration for minor offenses related
to cannabis (Amnesty International, 2020). This approach perpetuates cycles of poverty and inequality, further
marginalizing those who are already vulnerable. Advocates argue that the government should focus on
decriminalization and restorative justice practices to address these disparities (Arambulo et al., 2021). A shift toward
legalization would not only promote equity but also allow for the expungement of records for individuals previously
convicted of non-violent cannabis offenses.
In conclusion, the Philippine government has taken some important steps toward reforming marijuana policy,
particularly with the introduction of medical cannabis legislation. However, for many individuals seeking relief from
chronic pain, anxiety, or other health issues, the current system still feels out of reach. We need a more accessible and
compassionate approach that truly prioritizes the health and well-being of our people.
Imagine a future where patients can easily access safe, high-quality medical marijuana without fear of stigma or legal
repercussions. This is possible, but it requires stronger regulations and oversight. By implementing stricter tracking of
cannabis products.
