From fertilization until the time it is ready to leave the uterus, a growing foetus is totally
dependent on its mother for survival. The mother's body becomes specially adapted to act like
a life support machine for the foetus. The foetus cannot breathe or eat, so food and oxygen are
passed from the mother's blood to the foetus. Antibodies which give protection against disease
also pass into the foetus in the same way. Waste materials produced in the foetus’s body are
passed back to the mother's blood for removal. This all happens across the placenta.
