Communicative competence is an individual's ability to use language effectively in
various communication contexts, including four main skills, namely listening, speaking,
reading, and writing. This approach emphasizes the importance of social interaction, so that
students not only learn theory but also practice language in everyday life. There are many
benefits of implementing communicative competence in the classroom for students, some of
which are to improve language skills. With this approach, it helps students to be more
confident in communicating in various social situations. In addition, the communicative
approach is also useful for developing students' social skills. Social interaction-based learning
will make them learn to collaborate, discuss, and respect the opinions of others in everyday
life. Motivation and interest in learning certainly also increase with this approach. Especially
for language lessons. In addition, it can also increase student independence by practicing
effective communication. Another benefit that is no less important is as preparation for the
real world. Students will face real-world challenges, and good communication skills are
needed in various aspects of life.
So, how do teachers plan lessons to support this communicative competence? Because
teachers are the key in planning learning, steps that can support the development of students'
communicative competence are determining clear learning objectives, learning objectives
must be specific related to the competence to be achieved, for example, the ability to speak
formally and informally. Using active learning methods, such as conducting group
discussions, role-play, or simulating real situations that can make learning more interesting
and relevant to students which encourages them to actively participate. Do not forget,
compiling contextual materials, teaching materials must be relevant to students' daily lives so
that they can see how important it is to have language skills. Providing constructive feedback,
meaning that feedback from teachers must be regular until students can improve their
weaknesses and understand their strengths. Finally, creating a supportive learning
environment, the classroom environment must be conducive to open communication and
interaction between students, so that they feel comfortable and safe to speak and ask
questions.
