PLATE GIRDER
Design a welded plate girder of span 24m to carry superimposed load of 35kN/m. Avoid use of
bearing and intermediate stiffeners. Use Fe 415 (E 250) steel.
• Data
○ Span = 24m
○ Super-imposed load = 35kN/m
• Moment and shear force
○ Loads
Self weight =
w = factored self weight
W= total factored load on the girder
W=w
Self weight =
= 4.2kN/m
Super-imposed load = 35kN/m
Total load = 35+4.2
= 39.2kN/m
Factored load = 39.2
= 58.8kN/m
○ Moment
M=
= 4233.6kNm
MODULE 4 Page 1
= 4233.6kNm
○ Shear force
V=
= 705.6kN
• Design of web
• Depth of the web plate
As per clause 8.6.1.1, IS : 800
d=
k=
= 1043mm
Use 1000mm plates
Web thickness =
= 15.56
Web plate = 1000mm
• Design of flanges
○ Area of flange
MODULE 4 Page 2
As per clause 8.2.1.2, IS 800
To keep flange in plastic category ,
16.8
Use 40mm plates
Width of plate =
Use 480mm wide 40mm thick plates
Check for moment capacity of the girder
MODULE 4 Page 3
I = 1.120
Hence section is adequate.
Shear resistance of web
Clause 8.4, IS 800
Hence the section is adequate, no stiffeners required.
Check for end bearing
Bearing strength of web
IS 800, Pg 67, Clause 8.7.4
Assume
Width of support = 200mm
Minimum stiff bearing = 100mm
Dispersion length = 2.5
MODULE 4 Page 4
= 727kN > 705.6kN
Hence adequate and no end stiffener required
Design of weld connecting web plate and flange
Maximum shear force = 705.6kN
Shear stress in flange at the level of junction of web and flange
q=
=0.512n/
Shear force per mm length in the junction
= 0.512
= 245.76N
If s is the size of shop weld,
• Throat thickness or effective thickness
Assuming normal weld,
t = 0.7s
• Design strength of the weld = design stress of the weld area
265s = 245.76
S=0.92mm
But a minimum of 5mm is to be provided since thickness of web is 16mm.
Intermittent welds may be provided (Clause 10.5.5)
MODULE 4 Page 5
Use 40mm long welds with a gap of 160mm
Minimum weld length 40mm
Maximum un-welded length 12
Design
Web : 1000
Flange : 480
No stiffeners required
Weld : 5mm intermittent of length 40mm and a gap of 160mm.
