Spirometer:
Introduction to the sensor:
Spirometer is a device that is used to check how well your lungs work. It measures
how much air you breathe in, how much you breathe out and how quickly you breathe
out.
Spirometer is used by healthcare practitioners to identify asthma, chronic obstructive
pulmonary disease (COPD), and other breathing-related diseases.
Photos of the sensor:
Advantages and Disadvantages:
Advantages:
1- Accurate Diagnosis: The use of a spirometer can be critical in the early diagnosis
of asthma, COPD or restrictive lung diseases.
2-Monitoring Progress: It offers a lifelong follow-up of lung function and a checklist
to evaluate therapies implemented.
3-Non-invasive: There’s no need for any surgery or intrusive activities which makes it
restful and harmless.
4-Quick and Simple: Easy to carry out and does not take a very long time.
5-Preventative Insight: In some situations, even the sight of evident symptoms, the
readings are helpful in pinpointing existing problems.
6-Portable Options: Some of the latest spirometers are small and fit for home use.
Disadvantages:
1-User Dependent: The effort and technique of the patient participating in the
measurement largely determines the accuracy of the results.
2-Limited Information: Provides an indirect approach to diagnosing few lung
problems; serves as an adjunct to many.
3-Not Suitable for Everyone: There are people, such as very young children, older
people or very ill people, who are not able to properly perform the test.
4-Risk of Dizziness: Attempts to forcefully exhale into the device can produce mild
episodes of dizziness or discomfort which subsides fairly quickly.
5-Maintenance: The care of home model spirometers and calibration from time to
time is important to obtain precise outcome.
6-Cost: Some models of the spirometer might be inexpensive however frequent clinics
or higher level models can be costly.
Biomedical Applications:
- Diagnosis of a respiratory condition or manage asthma.
- Assessing the impact on ventilation of a non-respiratory condition, such as
myopathy.
- Screening for diseases early or before the appearance of clinical signs.
- The differential diagnosis of a suspected disease.
- Establishment of the general condition of a subject.
- Preoperative examination for thoracic or upper abdominal surgery.
- The differential diagnosis of vocal cord dysfunction.
Demo/Classwork:
-first, we connect the DAQ to the computer
-then we connect the spirometer to the DAQ(channel 1)
-open logger pro
-go to experiment:1- set up the sensor
2-calibrate the sensor to obtain accurate measurements
-we will obtain this page
-we click collect and start to inhale and exhale
-we will obtain this graph
-when the graph is above the x-axis it means that we are inhaling, and we the graph
when it is below the x-axis means that we are exhaling.
-To save our data we clicked save as
What is the purpose of it?
- Measures lung function by analyzing the volume and speed of air that can be inhaled
and exhaled.
Conclusion:
In this lab session we have learned a lot about this sensor it functions, application,
working principle and finally how do we collect data from such a sensor.
