ABSTRACT

The Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme established by the Federal

Government of Nigeria was aimed at exposing students of higher institutions to
acquire industrial skill and practical experience in their approved courses of study
and also to prepare the students for the industrial work situation which they are
likely to meet after graduation. This technical report is based on the experiences
gained during my three months of industrial training at KEDCO, Niger Street
Road. The first chapter is about SIWES, Aims and objectives of SIWES. While
second chapter is about the organization where the SIWES training was received.
The third chapter is about work experience in IT Department. The fourth chapter
also talk about the problem encountered during period of training and their possible
solution, summary, recommendation and conclution.

CHAPTER ONE

1.0 Introduction

Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) is a special program

designed to expose and prepare students of higher institutions of learning on
practical aspect of their profession.
Before the establishment of SIWES, there was a growing concern among
industrialist that graduates of institutions of higher learning lack adequate practical
experience suitable for employment. Thus, employers are of the opinion that
theory-oriented system of education going on in higher institutions was not
responsive to their needs. It is against this background that the rationale for
initiating and designing the scheme was hinged.

1.1 About SIWES

SIWES was established by Industrial Training Fund (ITF) in 1973 to solve the
problem of lack of adequate practical skills preparatory for employment in
industries by Nigerian graduate of tertiary institution. The scheme exposes students
to industry based skills necessary for a smooth transition from the classroom to the
world of work. It affords students of tertiary institutions the opportunity to
familiarize and exposed them to the needed experience in handling machinery and
equipment which were usually not available in the education institution.
Participation in SIWES has become pre-requisite for the award of Diploma NCE,
HND and Degree certificates in some discipline in most Nigerian Institutions of
higher learning in accordance with the education policy of the government.

1.2 Aims and Objectives of SIWES

Aim: Students thinking about what characterizes a meaningful technical report and
provide some hints and tips that, if implemented, have the potential to improve the
quality of a technical report produced by them.
 To acquire industrial skills and experience in approved course of study.
 To prepare the students for work situation they are likely to encounter after
graduation.
 To provide an avenue for students in Nigerian tertiary institution to acquire
industrial skills and experience relevant to their courses of study.
 To provide students with an opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge in
real work situation.
 To exposes the students to develop techniques and methods of handling
equipment and machinery that may not be available in their institutions of
learning.
 The funds also build capacity for graduates and youth employment, in the
context of Small Scale Industrialization, in the economy.
 To promote and encourage the acquisition of skills in industry and commerce
with a view to generating a pool of indigenous trained manpower sufficient
to meet the needs of the Nigerian economy.
 To prepare Students for the post-graduation working environment.
CHAPTER TWO

2.0 Introduction

this Chapter examines how the organization’s history reflects broader trends and
issues in its field, highlighting its contributions to industry, community, or society.
By the end of this chapter, readers will have a clearer understanding of the
organization’s roots and the journey that has shaped its present-day character and
strategic direction.

2.1 History of Organization

Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) is one of the eleven (11)

electricity distribution companies successfully privatized and handed over to new
investors on November 1, 2013, as part of the electricity power sector reform
program implementation.
Located in the north-western geopolitical zone of Nigeria, KEDCO is licensed by
the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to generate, distribute,
and market electricity to customers within Kano, Katsina, and Jigawa States,
covering a geographical area of 67,128 km2. These customers are served by
fourteen (14) regional offices, through fourteen (14) transmission stations and
forty-three (43) injection sub-stations across the franchise area.
In July 2022, KEDCO was restructured by the Federal Government and appointed
an interim Board and Management to steer the Company’s affairs for transition to
new investors.
On November 1st, 2023, Future Energies Africa (FEA) Limited took over the
affairs as the core investor in Kano Electricity Distribution Company. Its mandate
is to rebuild a modernized electricity distribution system that will enhance service
delivery, reduce ATC&C losses, and improve financial performance by leveraging
network investment and digital transformation for optimal efficiency.

MOTTO: To be an efficient power distributor focused on customer satisfaction.

VISION: To enable re-industrialization and economic empowerment through safe

and reliable power distribution.

2.2 Main Service Offered by the Organization

KEDCO is licensed by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC)

to distribute, and market electricity to customers within Kano, Katsina, and Jigawa
states, covering the geographical area of 67,128 km2 in the northwestern part of
Nigeria.

CHAPTER THREE

3.0 Introduction

The above chapter explained what I have learned during my industrial training.
Therefore this chapter feature the experience gained during the period of my
industrial training.
3.1 Activities carried out during the period of IT

The following is a list of experience I have achieved during my industrial training.

• Ability to work with internet.

• Ability to use PC.
• Ability to use Email.
• Ability to work with team.

• Ability for Creating a Bootable Flash Drive.

• Ability for Installing Windows.

• Ability for Installing Office.

• Ability for Assembling & Dissembling PCs.

CHAPTER FOUR

4.0 Introduction

In this Chapter, I am going to explain the problems I encountered during my

SIWES period, and give some possible solution for it, based on my opinion. I am
also going to summarize and provide some recommendations. Finally, I am going
to write conclusion and reference of this report.

4.1 problems encountered

Challenges that I was confronted with at the helpdesk were mainly centered on
poor interpersonal relationship between the IT students. This was put in check via
the intervention of our superiors through discussion and meeting. Also, when users
call in, some of them are either rude and talk impolitely, or most do not even know
how to table their complaint. So I was told to try and be patient and understanding
with some of these users.

There was also a time when the number of IT students at the workshop was small
and this resulted to some students being overworked. More students were however
brought on during the course of my stay.

Finally the Organization don’t pay IT students a penny, and you must come daily, I
mean every working day, or else you get punish by the head.

4.2 Possible Solution

 Create a user-friendly guide for complaints.

 Develop a system for escalating difficult interactions.
 Implement a rotational schedule to distribute workload fairly.
 Recruit additional interns or temporary staff.
 Establish a feedback mechanism for policy concerns.
 Propose non-monetary benefits such as certificates, transportation
allowances, or free meals.

4.3 Summary

This report documents the Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES)
completed by Aliyu Muhammad Musa at the Kano Electricity Distribution
Company (KEDCO) from August to October 2024. The objective of SIWES, a
Federal Government initiative, is to provide practical industrial skills to students,
bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world applications. It
also highlights the importance of SIWES in preparing students for the workforce
while advocating for improvements in student support during industrial training.

4.4 Recommendations

1. Proper orientation for students before their industrial training.

2. Regular monthly allowances for students on industrial training should be
paid promptly.
3. SIWES Conducted at KEDCO is a recommendable place for industrial
training to computer science students.
4. SIWES should provide more safety equipment to prevent further
environmental and health hazards.

4.5 Conclusion

My six month industrial training with KEDCO has been one of the most
interesting, productive and instructive experience in my life. Through this training,
I have gained new insight and comprehensive understanding about the real
industrial working and functional skills, it has also improved my theoretical and
practical knowledge.
